Sheffield United legend and boyhood Blade Billy Sharp has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, bringing the curtain down on an extraordinary 22-year career that saw him score 299 goals.

The former Blades captain confirmed the news over the weekend while working as a pundit for Sky Sports, explaining that he wanted to walk away from the game on his own terms after enjoying a career packed with memorable moments, goals and promotions.

Sharp had been a free agent since leaving Doncaster Rovers at the end of last season, but the experienced striker signed off in fitting fashion, scoring a hat-trick in his final appearance against Peterborough United.

It was a fitting conclusion for a forward who built his reputation on an instinctive ability to find the back of the net, with the ball almost always magnetised to him inside the penalty area.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Sharp explained his decision to call time on his playing career.

“I’m going to hang my boots up. I’ve given it a good ride. I’ve got a long way, got to 40,” he said.

“I wanted to go out on my own terms. I’ve seen many friends get taken away by injury and things like that.

“I wanted to go out with a bang and luckily for me, I got a hat-trick in my last appearance.”

Sharp also reflected on the passion that defined his career, admitting that his competitive nature was a major part of what kept him going for so long.

“I’m maybe not the most talented player, maybe not the most liked on the pitch but that’s because I love football. I’m passionate and I think I’ve got every single bit out of my career.

“I’ve made memories in football that will last me a lifetime.”

A Boyhood Blade Became A Sheffield United Icon

Sharp’s retirement marks the end of a career belonging to one of their own. Sharp grew up supporting the Blades and came through the club’s academy before establishing himself as a professional. His connection with United was about far more than simply pulling on the red and white shirt. He represented the kind of local player supporters could identify with, someone who understood the club’s identity and the significance of playing for his boyhood team.

Sharp first made his name at Bramall Lane during the early stages of his career against Watford in 2004, before returning to the club in 2015, following spells elsewhere that included successful periods with Doncaster Rovers and Southampton.

His second spell at United proved particularly vital to both his career and also the Blades’ journey back up to the Premier League. After rejoining the Blades in League One, Sharp played a crucial role in the club’s resurgence under Chris Wilder, helping to transform the atmosphere around Bramall Lane and restore the connection between the team and its supporters.

United secured promotion from League One in the 2016/17 season, winning the league with 100 points, and Sharp was central to their success, netting 30 times that campaign. His goals, work rate and leadership helped lay the foundations for what followed.

The Blades then enjoyed a remarkable 2017/18 campaign in the Championship, finishing tenth in their first season back in the second tier. That progress continued the following year, when Wilder’s side finished second and secured automatic promotion to the Premier League behind Norwich City, with Sharp scoring on 23 occasions.

Sharp’s contribution did not end with promotion. He continued to lead the line for United in the Premier League during the 2019/20 campaign.

It was only fitting for Sharp to be the one to rescue a point for the Blades away at Bournemouth in their first game back in the top flight for well over a decade. Sharp also scored in the reverse fixture against Bournemouth at Bramall Lane that term, and against Norwich, contributing to a Sheffield United side that surprised many by finishing ninth in the Premier League and almost booked a place in European competition.

Sharp’s Name is Etched into History

He remained an important figure around the squad even when his starting opportunities became more limited, offering experience and leadership to younger players while continuing to contribute in front of goal.

Across his spells with Sheffield United, he went on to make more than 300 appearances for the Blades, score over 100 goals and captain the club he had adored since childhood. And earning a place among the names that will always be associated with United’s recent history.

Reflecting on the 300-goal milestone he narrowly missed, Sharp admitted that reaching the landmark would have been special, but insisted that it did not diminish his achievements.

“It would have been lovely to have got that 300th goal on that day but I’ve had an unbelievable career,” he said.

Unbelievable is an understatement. The word “legend” gets chucked about quite loosely in sports today, but Billy Sharp is well and truly a Sheffield United legend and he goes down in history as one of the greatest players English football league history.
