Sheffield United Handed Timely Boost Ahead of Rams Test
Sheffield United welcome struggling Derby County to Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon as Chris Wilder’s side look to build on last weekend’s hard-fought victory at Bristol City.
The Blades bounced back from a late defeat away at Portsmouth by claiming a valuable 1-0 win at Ashton Gate, with Oliver Arblaster’s first-half strike proving enough to secure all three points.
The result also continued United’s improving defensive record, with Wilder’s men keeping two clean sheets in their last three matches as they look to climb the Championship table.
Derby, meanwhile, travel to South Yorkshire in desperate need of a positive result after a difficult run of form. The Rams have collected just six points all season, with their only victory coming on September 1st. Five defeats and two draws have followed, leaving John Eustace’s side searching for a much-needed turnaround.
Sheffield United Team News
Sheffield United have received a welcome boost ahead of the encounter, with Femi Seriki set to return to the matchday squad after missing recent fixtures.
The right-back’s absence has left Wilder short of natural options in the position, particularly with Matt Doherty and Jamie Shackleton also dealing with injury concerns. Hamza Choudhury’s second yellow card against Portsmouth further complicated matters last week, leaving the Blades with limited alternatives.
However, Choudhury is available again, while Seriki’s return provides Wilder with greater flexibility in how he sets up his side.
Speaking ahead of the Derby clash in his pre-match press conference, the United boss highlighted the importance of having several players back involved over the last few games, including Seriki, Harrison Burrows, Ryan Oné and Tahith Chong.
“We’ve missed the likes of Harrison and Femi and Ryan and Chong,” Wilder said.
“I think you’ve seen their impact, three out of the four games recently as well and in the upturn in our performances as well, and the ability that the boys have given us off the bench.”
Wilder was particularly pleased with the contributions of Oné, who has impressed since returning to the fold, while Burrows also earned praise for his performance against Bristol City.
“Ryan came on the pitch against Lincoln and was really good, and on Saturday was really good. He took us up the pitch. And Harrison I thought was outstanding on Saturday,” he added. “So to get Femi back gives us a really good option in that position.”
The Return of Seriki Gives Blades Flexibility
The United manager stressed that his side are not restricted to one formation, explaining that modern football requires flexibility both in and out of possession.
“There’s different ways to play. There’s different ways to build. There’s different ways to create and different ways to finish,” Wilder said.
He explained: “As we understand, the game evolves, it’s moved on. But having that option that the likes of Femi and Harrison gives us off the bench or starting, and I think it was there for everybody to see on Saturday, that we had Romelle and Ryan coming off the bench and getting us up the pitch. And I wouldn’t say a hectic last ten or 15 minutes; we did what we had to do. It was important that we got the clean sheet, but they gave us an attacking option, an outlet in the last ten or 15 minutes which resulted in us creating three or four pretty good chances.”
Wilder Wary of Wounded Rams Threat
Despite Derby’s poor run of results, Wilder has warned against underestimating the visitors, insisting that John Eustace has faced significant challenges this season.
The Blades boss acknowledged that circumstances during pre-season have affected the Rams’ campaign, with uncertainty surrounding a potential takeover adding to the difficulties facing the club.
“I think if you’re talking about challenges John [Eustace] has had as big of a challenge as any of us have had in the division,” Wilder said. “John won’t be feeling sorry for himself; he’ll try and galvanise his team. They’ve got a lot of good players, a lot of things that happened in pre-season have gone against John, and maybe changed the outlook for their season.”
Wilder thinks Derby will arrive at Bramall Lane viewing the fixture as an opportunity to put their disappointing run behind them, particularly with the backing of a sizeable travelling support. “They’ll see this as an ideal opportunity,” he explained. “I think it’s a great game for them to get themselves back on track. A full house from an away end, always an edgy game.”
“They’ll believe their performance levels have been pretty good; they’ll believe that they’re one performance, stroke result, away from getting themselves back on track,” Wilder added.
Sheffield United will hope to continue their good run of form against Derby County at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon, having won five of the last six meetings against the Rams in South Yorkshire.
