Sheffield United 1-1 Derby County: Blades Share Points Thanks to Remarkable Rams Stopper
Sheffield United managed to rescue a 1-1 draw against the ten men of Derby County at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon, but they will feel unfortunate not to have claimed all three points.
Bobby Clark put the visitors ahead in the first half, though the sending off of Dion Sanderson changed the complexion of the game in the final 20 minutes. Eventually, the Blades found the equaliser when a delightful cross from Romelle Donovan was met at the back post by Patrick Bamford to steer home.
Lineups
Blades: Cooper, Arblaster (Peck 57), Tanganga, Choudhury (Seriki 57), Cannon (Ayew 67), Burrows, Kitching, Chong, Brereton Díaz (Donovan 67), Phillips, Bamford (Campbell 80).
Unused: Betts, McCallum, Rothwell, Baptiste.
Derby: Zetterstrom, Ozoh (Bilbija 90), Clark, Morris, Brewster (Johnston 73), Szmodics (Fraulo 73), Meister (Robinson 73), Ward (Salvesen 81), Nyambe, Hedges, Sanderson.
Unused: Vickers, Fuseini, Mowatt, Blackett-Taylor.
First Half
The Blades started brightly, with Ben Brereton Diaz unable to make proper contact with Tahith Chong’s inviting delivery at the far post. Derby’s Ryan Nyambe was then booked for tugging back Bamford after the United striker had managed to get beyond him.
However, the visitors gradually grew into the contest and began putting the home defence under pressure, winning a succession of corners as they looked to find an opening. Michael Cooper was eventually called upon to make a meaningful contribution in the 35th minute, while United were given another warning when Meister broke through the defensive line but failed to convert from a promising position.
Derby’s pressure eventually paid off three minutes later. Having already seen an effort turned behind by Cooper, Bobby Clark reacted quickest after Sammie Szmodics’ pass released Hedges, whose attempt struck the post. Clark was on hand to capitalise on the rebound and put the visitors in front heading into the interval.
Second Half
Chris Wilder responded by making a double substitution shortly after the hour mark, introducing Femi Seriki and Sydie Peck for Hamza Choudhury and Ollie Arblaster.
The changes almost produced an immediate response, with Bamford setting up Brereton Diaz, whose curling effort drifted over the crossbar. United continued to search for an equaliser, although Liam Kitching was booked for pulling back Ozoh as Derby attempted to maintain control.
The match took another significant turn in the 66th minute when Derby were reduced to 10 men. Sanderson was shown a red card for bringing down Seriki as the defender attempted to launch a United counter-attack.
With a numerical advantage, the Blades increased the pressure and began committing more players forward. Romelle Donovan tested Zetterstrom with a powerful effort from distance before United’s sustained spell of pressure finally yielded a goal.
Following a series of corners, Donovan delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, where Bamford got the decisive touch to redirect it beyond the Derby goalkeeper and restore parity. Unfortunately for United, the goalscorer was unable to continue and was forced off through injury shortly afterwards.
The hosts sensed an opportunity to claim all three points and continued to push forward. Chong came agonisingly close to connecting with Campbell’s low cross, while Zetterstrom produced another important stop to keep out Peck’s effort despite the difficult conditions.
Seven minutes of additional time offered United further opportunities to complete the turnaround. Campbell looked to have found the breakthrough with a strike on the turn, only for Zetterstrom to produce an outstanding save to preserve Derby’s hopes of taking something from the game.
