Sheffield United returned to winning ways on Friday night as Chris Wilder’s side secured a deserved 1-0 victory over Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham at Bramall Lane.

The Blades produced an encouraging performance in front of their home supporters, showing greater attacking intent and intensity from the opening whistle after Wilder had challenged his players to carry the momentum from the second half of last weekend’s draw against Derby County into this fixture.

The winger was involved from the opening stages, delivering a dangerous low cross into the penalty area after just three minutes. Jordan Ayew managed to get ahead of his marker but could only guide his effort narrowly over the crossbar.

Donovan continued to cause problems and was involved in another promising opportunity shortly afterwards, skipping past Issa Kaboré and driving inside Dom Hyam before the Wrexham defender recovered to produce an important interception.

The youngster’s direct approach gave United a different dimension going forward, with his willingness to take on defenders helping the hosts maintain pressure on the visitors.

The Blades’ positive start eventually paid dividends just after the half-hour mark.

Ayew showed excellent strength and determination to turn inside the penalty area before getting a shot away. Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Patterson could only parry the effort into a dangerous area, and Ben Brereton Diaz was quickest to react, following in to fire the rebound into the net and give United a deserved advantage.

United had an excellent opportunity to extend their advantage on 57 minutes.

Sheaf initially looked to create something for Wrexham with a cross, but Michael Cooper intercepted and quickly turned defence into attack, releasing Ayew in behind the opposition backline.

However, Sheaf showed impressive recovery pace and produced an outstanding last-ditch challenge to deny the forward before he could get a shot away.

Wrexham attempted to build some momentum as the second half progressed, but the visitors struggled to create anything of real substance against a United side that defended their advantage with increasing composure.

The Blades managed the closing stages well, restricting Parkinson’s side to very little in the way of clear-cut opportunities and ensuring Cooper was rarely troubled.

Chris Wilder Delighted With Sheffield United Performance

Speaking live on Sky Sports after the final whistle, Wilder was pleased with the intent and approach shown by his players, believing they had delivered exactly the response he had requested following the Derby draw.

“The intent and approach was really good… I asked them to start the game as we finished it second half against Derby and they did. High up the pitch, got the press right,” Wilder explained.

The United manager acknowledged that his side would face a difficult second half, particularly with Wrexham likely to respond after falling behind.

“We understood that it was going to be a difficult second half. I’ve just said to the players, we’re just a little bit loose on that first pass out.

“There was always going to be a reaction because they’ve won games of football for a long time and they’re no mugs and they’ve got a real spirit about them. They had five or 10 minutes in the second half, we saw that out.”

Wilder was also pleased with how United eventually regained control of proceedings, highlighting the importance of retaining possession and seeing out the pressure.

“They had nothing to lose, we had everything to lose. Sometimes you can have to defend and we did make a change late on. Michael [Cooper] has not had a lot to do in terms of saves.”

Blades Boss Offers Verdict on Forward Partnership

There was also particular praise for Brereton Diaz, whose first-half goal ultimately proved decisive. “I’ve known Ben for a long time. I know what his qualities are, I know what his character is like.

“I know where he started as a centre-forward in the early part of his career when he got his move to Blackburn. I’ve tracked his career right the way through. There’s a lot of clubs in the division that were after him and delighted that he chose us.”

The Blades boss also acknowledged that new arrivals do not always immediately find their rhythm. “Not everybody hits the ground running. Not any player, whatever division they are, sometimes get themselves going but that’ll do them no harm.”

Wilder was also impressed with the partnership between Ayew and Brereton Diaz, believing their movement and link-up play had given United a genuine threat in the final third.

“I thought the performance of the two at the top of the pitch was really good, especially first half. They linked well, stretched well and the better team won the game of football.”

Wilder added: “I asked our players to ignite the fanbase, and I think they did with their intent and the approach. I thought we played some really good football.”

Sheffield United will now turn their attentions to a midweek trip to Preston North End who currently reside at the bottom of the EFL Championship.
