Chris Wilder Refuses to “Take a Wrecking Ball” to Sheffield United After Charlton Setback
Sheffield United suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat away at Charlton Athletic on Saturday afternoon, missing the opportunity to climb into the Championship’s top seven.
The Blades travelled to The Valley looking to extend their positive run of form after victories over Wrexham and Preston North End, but were unable to make it three consecutive league wins.
Charlton started brightly and looked determined to put the visitors under pressure from the opening whistle. Their positive approach was rewarded in the 12th minute when Alli found space on the edge of the penalty area before sending a low effort towards the near post. Michael Cooper was unable to keep the shot out, giving the hosts an early advantage.
The Addicks continued to threaten and almost doubled their lead shortly afterwards. Tyreece Campbell delivered a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but Mwamba was unable to make the necessary contact from close range as the opportunity went begging.
Sheffield United gradually grew into the contest and found an equaliser with 25 minutes on the clock. Romelle Donovan was brought down by Alli, allowing the visitors to deliver a dangerous free-kick into the Charlton penalty area.
Kalvin Phillips took responsibility for the set-piece, with his delivery causing considerable problems for goalkeeper Mannion. The Charlton stopper could only push the ball back into a dangerous area, allowing Jordan Ayew to react quickest and head into the unguarded net.
The Blades looked to build on their equaliser and came close to turning the game around moments later. Mannion again struggled to deal with a Phillips delivery, this time from a corner, but managed to recover in time to collect a header from Kitching before it crossed the line.
Chris Wilder made a change at the interval, introducing Femi Seriki in place of Hamza Choudhury. However, the defender’s afternoon was brought to an abrupt end just two minutes into the second half.
Following a physical contest with Campbell, Seriki went down in considerable discomfort and required lengthy treatment before eventually being stretchered off. Mark McGuinness was brought on to replace him, with the incident proving a significant blow for the visitors.
With the game approaching its final stages, Charlton introduced Matty Godden for Kelman in the 75th minute as they searched for a decisive goal.
The substitution proved inspired. Just four minutes after coming onto the pitch, Godden found the net to restore Charlton’s advantage.
Alli was once again at the heart of the action, driving towards the Sheffield United defence before lifting an inviting ball into the penalty area. Godden had found the perfect position and made no mistake, guiding a first-time finish beyond Cooper to send The Valley into celebration.
The Blades were unable to find another equaliser, suffering a disappointing defeat that leaves them frustrated heading into the international break.
Wilder Provides Devastating Seriki Injury Update
Speaking to SUTV after the defeat, Wilder admitted that his side had missed an opportunity, while also expressing his disappointment with the manner of the two goals conceded.
The United boss felt his players had shown plenty of effort but acknowledged that they never managed to establish the control he wanted.
“Yeah, it’s really disappointing. I think there was plenty of effort. It was a typical third game in a week in the Championship and it could have gone either way.
“I think we had the better of the chances and they were two really poor goals from our point of view. I think Michael [Cooper] will be a touch disappointed with the first one.
“We never really got control of the game as we would have wanted. They were fighting for their lives and their performance was a positive one, but it’s a missed opportunity.”
However, the biggest concern for Sheffield United supporters will undoubtedly be the injury suffered by Femi Seriki.
On the defender’s condition, Wilder revealed: “He’s out for the season. I think he’s ruptured his patella. So yeah, it’s a really, really disappointing one.”
Sheffield United Refuse to Panic Despite Missed Opportunity
Wilder acknowledged that the results recently have sometimes been difficult to make sense of, but insisted his focus remains firmly on improving his own team rather than worrying about the wider Championship picture.
“You look at the results after we came in and you scratch your head. But the one we have to concentrate on is our own and we have not done enough things right.
“We didn’t capitalise on our moments to get the result we were all after.”
Despite the frustration, the United boss was keen to avoid an overreaction, insisting that his side would not allow one disappointing afternoon to derail their recent progress.
“I’m not going to take a wrecking ball to it,” he stated. “There is always emotion in it – when you win then you’re going up and when you don’t then it is a different narrative.
“We will keep calm, like I have all the way through. I kept calm after we beat Wrexham, Bristol City and when we won on Tuesday. There are mini setbacks, mini highs and mini lows that we need to deal with.
“It is a missed opportunity. I’d have loved to have climbed into the top seven, but we need to rest and recover over the international break.”
The Blades now have an opportunity to rest and also work on tactics over this international break before facing Watford at home in a couple of weeks time.
