Manchester United suffered a painful 1-0 loss at home to Manchester City at the weekend and will be looking to give their supporters a lift when taking on EFL Cup third-round opponents Brighton at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

A selection conundrum is facing Red Devils' manager Michael Carrick, who may wish to rest some key players while recognising the need to atone for his team’s derby defeat.

United felt they were on the wrong end of a poor decision when Erling Haaland's goal was allowed to stand, but they largely struggled to create chances against a City side reduced to ten men by Phil Foden's 23rd minute red card.

While United suffered their second league loss of the season, Brighton moved up the standings thanks to a thumping 5-0 victory at Coventry City.

Team news

Luke Shaw (thigh) missed the Manchester derby and faces a late assessment. Matthijs de Ligt (back), Manuel Ugarte (knee), Amad Diallo (ankle), Tom Heaton (hamstring) and Carlos Baleba (ankle) remain out of contention.

Changes seem inevitable, including a probable starting berth for Benjamin Sesko, who netted in last Thursday’s 4-0 victory at home to FC Sabah on Champions League matchday one.

Brighton are still dealing with a long list of absentees.

Yankuba Minteh (calf), Kaoru Mitoma (thigh), Jack Hinshelwood, Zadok Yohanna (both unspecified), Mats Wieffer, Stefanos Tzimas (both knee) and Evan Ferguson (ankle) are out of contention, while Georginio Rutter (ankle), Femi Azeez (thigh) and Michael Svoboda (knee) face fitness checks after missing the win at Coventry.

The stats

Manchester United have opened the scoring in four of their last six home games and Brighton have won just one of their last six away matches.

Four of the last five meetings between these two teams have featured goals for both teams, while three of United's last four games have featured at least four goals.

The Seagulls have conceded multiple goals in three of their last six away fixtures.

Prediction

United need a lift after their disappointing experience on Sunday and they can respond by defeating Brighton without requiring a penalty shootout.

Carrick does his best to remain calm at all times, but he was clearly furious with the VAR decision to award City's winning goal at the weekend.

He will also have been unconvinced by his own team's performance and is sure to demand a positive response.

United should be highly motivated, given what happened at the weekend and that makes them tough opponents for Brighton, who are hampered by injuries.

Albion are slick going forward, but rather less convincing at the back and any weaknesses could be seized upon by in-form United striker Sesko, who has netted in two of his last three appearances.

Score Prediction: Manchester United 3-2 Brighton
