Revisiting BVB's previous 8 cup games against Werder Bremen
Borussia Dortmund turn their attention towards the DFB-Pokal tomorrow as Werder Bremen visit Signal Iduna Park for their clash in the second round of the competition. This marks their ninth tie in the domestic cup and a first since 2020. Here's how the rivals fared in their previous eight cup meetings:
1) Werder Bremen 3-4 Borussia Dortmund (1937)
The first official clash between the sides came in the German Cup, which was called Tschammerpokal back in 1937. It was roller-coaster game with Bremen going in front, only for BVB to fight back and then fall behind again, before scoring the equalizer followed by the winner in extra-time.
2) Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Werder Bremen (1963)
It took almost 30 years for the rivals to clash in the cup again and when they did collide, Die Borussen ran out victorious again, this time in a more sombre affair that produced only two goals for a straight-forward home win.
3) Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Werder Bremen (1989)
This remains the most coveted fixture between the sides as they contested the 1989 cup final, clinched by Dortmund again for their second title in the competition. Bremen went in front after 15 minutes but the BVB responded with four goals, including a brace from Norbert Dickel.
4) Werder Bremen 2-0 Borussia Dortmund (1993)
Four years later, Bremen and Dortmund were drawn together in the Round of 16 of the cup once more and the former finally got one over their rivals here, claiming the spoils on the back of a double from Wynton Rufer.
5) Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Werder Bremen (2008)
In the 2008-09 season, Dortmund and Bremen met in the last-16 of the DFB-Pokal once more and won easily to advance into the next round. Diego had pulled one back for the visitors late on but it couldn't inspire Bremen to a comeback.
6) Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Werder Bremen (2009)
Exactly a year later, the sides met in the same round of the cup again and the Green-Whites exacted revenge with a win of the identical scoreline. Alex Frei's 11th-minute strike had BVB's noses in front, but Hugo Almeida and Claudio Pizarro scored after the hour mark to turn the tie on its head.
7) Borussia Dortmund 3-3 (5-7 on penalties) Werder Bremen (2019)
The one and only time that Dortmund and Bremen decided a cup tie on penalties, and it was one to remember as well, with the Bundesliga rivals playing out a pulsating six-goal thriller at the Westfalonstadion before the match went into shootouts, where Paco Alcacer and Maximilian Philipp missed their post-kicks for the BVB, who lost 5-7.
8) Werder Bremen 3-2 Borussia Dortmund (2020)
Werder Bremen managed to knockout out Borussia Dortmund from the domestic cup for the third consecutive time here, beating them 3-2 at home. Second-half goals from Erling Haaland and Giovanni Reyna weren't enough to rescue the Black and Yellow from going out in the Round of 16 again.
