Mainz and Strasbourg are both enjoying long unbeaten runs and that could set up a very entertaining clash when they meet in the first leg of their Conference League quarter-final tie at the Mewa Arena on Thursday.

Bundesliga outfit Mainz are unbeaten in eight games and are on a four-match winning streak, a run that has propelled them clear of the relegation zone domestically and set up what is their maiden European quarter-final.

Strasbourg's unbeaten run has reached double figures following their weekend win over Nice in Ligue 1 and they have only lost two of 16 matches since Gary O'Neil succeeded Liam Rosenior as head coach in early January.

Team news

Mainz have been without leading scorer Nadiem Amiri for the last seven matches due to a heel issue and he again looks set to miss out alongside Maxim Dal and Stefan Bell.

Dominik Kohr is also a major doubt after hobbling off in Saturday's Bundesliga win at Hoffenheim.

Strasbourg have recently lost 20-goal forward Joaquin Panichelli to an ACL injury and are also without former Chelsea youngster Diego Moreira, although Abdoul Ouattara could feature following a recent back issue.

The stats

Mainz are unbeaten in eight and are on a four-match winning run across all competitions, while they have not lost any of their last nine home fixtures, a run that dates back to early December.

Including qualifying, Urs Fischer's side are a perfect five wins from five on home soil in the Conference League.

Strasbourg finished top of the league phase standings and are the only unbeaten team left in this season's competition.

Le Racing have won all five of their away matches in this season's Conference League.

Unbeaten in their last 10 matches across all competitions, Strasbourg have also lost just two of their 16 games under former Wolves and Bournemouth head coach O'Neil.

This will be the first competitive meeting between these two sides, although they did play out a goalless draw in a pre-season friendly last August.

Prediction

These two teams are arguably the form sides left in the Conference League and both will be confident of not only gaining a positive result on Thursday, but going on to lift the trophy in May.

That makes picking a winner difficult but goals are likely, with Mainz having scored in seven of their last eight games and Strasbourg failing to net in just two of their last 19.

Keeping clean-sheets at the other end has not been as straightforward for the French side, and one man that could capitalise for Mainz is midfielder Paul Nebel, who has stepped up to plate in the absence of top-scorer Amiri.

Nebel has four goal involvements in his last four games, scoring three times himself having netted only once all season before his recent upturn in attacking output.

The 23-year-old, who is a former Germany under-21 international, scored a brace in Mainz' last home game — the Bundesliga win over Eintracht Frankfurt — and he also provided an assist in his most recent European outing against Sigma Olomouc.

Although not prolific, it could be worth siding with Nebel to continue his recent hot streak by providing either a goal or an assist on Thursday.
