Motherwell have it all to do when they travel to Freiburg for the second leg of their Conference League play-off tie on Thursday night.

The Well trail after a 3-1 home defeat last week and know they need a stunning victory on the road to advance.

In all likelihood, Freiburg will take further control and earn another win, but the travelling Scots will be determined to give it everything they have got and will not go down without a fight.

Team news

Freiburg manager Julian Schuster made a number of changes for the German Cup win over Fortuna Dusseldorf and so it remains to be seen how many players will keep their places in the team on Thursday.

Igor Matanovic is expected to lead the line while Matthias Ginter will keep his place in the centre of the defence.

Motherwell goalscorer Regan Charles-Cook was subbed at half-time in the first leg after picking up a knock and will be assessed. Midfielder Oscar Priestmann missed last week's game with a calf problem and remains a doubt.

Paul McGinn is unavailable following knee surgery in the summer. Stephen O'Donnell, who came on with 12 minutes remaining in the first leg, could feature again as he boosts his fitness following a knee issue.

The stats

Seven of the last eight matches involving Freiburg have seen both teams score.

This is Motherwell’s first European tie against German opposition since 1994 when they lost 3-0 on aggregate to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Cup

Freiburg have scored a total of eight goals in their first two matches of the campaign.

Motherwell were unbeaten in their first six matches of the season, winning four and drawing two.

Prediction

Freiburg reached last season’s Europa League final and should have too much quality, although Motherwell showed they are no pushovers during last week’s first leg.

Taking the lead after only two minutes, fans at Fir Park were in dreamland before the Bundesliga side replied with three goals to take control of the tie.

While Alfred Johansson’s men will be up for the battle in Germany, Freiburg are likely to be too strong and should win comfortably.

Freiburg are likely to create a number of chances at home and have the quality to punish the Well if there are any momentary lapses of concentration.

Backing over 3.5 goals looks like a sensible bet and Motherwell can contribute to the tally by grabbing a consolation goal at the Europa-Park Stadion.

The Scottish Premiership club have already got the better of the Freiburg backline once while the Bundesliga side have failed to keep a clean sheet in 12 games.

Ten of those matches have seen both sides score and so goals look likely for this Conference League play-off clash.
