“We win and lose together”: Alonso shows faith in Penders after Chelsea’s Spurs setback
Xabi Alonso has said Chelsea have full confidence in Mike Penders despite the goalkeeper's mistake in defeat to Tottenham.
Penders was at fault for Tottenham's opening goal during the 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, as the 21-year-old punched Mateus Fernandes' set piece into his goal.
The error compounded a miserable night for Chelsea, who lost at home to Spurs in the Premier League for only the second time in 36 years.
Alonso's side also had Cole Palmer sent off for two needless bookings, before Mathys Tel fired home a late second to seal the win.
Penders was making his first Premier League start for the West Londoners, after Emi Martinez underwent surgery on a broken jaw sustained against Everton.
Alonso admitted that mistakes are a part of football and underlined his confidence in Penders. He said the young goalkeeper would remain in goal for Wednesday night's Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool.
"It’s part of the business; you need to deal with mistakes and we keep confidence in Mike and he will be in goal against Liverpool," Alonso said at full-time.
"We win and we lose together and it’s part of the job to deal with mistakes, myself as well as everyone.
"We support Mike and Geo (Quenda) as well, the guys starting their first [Premier League] games. He will want to prove he can do better - and we also have to show that."
