“We didn’t do good enough”: Alonso reacts as Chelsea fall to Sunderland and drop out of Champions League places
Xabi Alonso has said Chelsea did not do enough to break down Sunderland during his side's defeat at the Stadium of Light.
Chelsea lost 1-0 to Sunderland in the Premier League as Enzo Le Fee scored the winner from the penalty spot. Levi Colwill was penalised after pulling down Brian Brobbey inside the area, with Le Fee dispatching the spot-kick past Mike Penders.
The win was Sunderland's first in the Premier League since August and lifted the Black Cats off the bottom of the table.
Chelsea dominated the possession (69%) but were unable to covert that dominance into chances. Geovany Quenda fired an effort past the post, while substitute Danny Welbeck headed over late on. Chelsea also had a penalty appeal turned down with the game goalless, as Cole Palmer went over in the box.
Alonso cut a frustrated figure at full-time, as Chelsea dropped out of the Champions League places.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, he said: "The game has been really tight, really competitive, not many chances. The goal came from that penalty.
"We were not creating enough chances in the final third against the low block. We were not controlling and sustaining the attack there.
"You can do it, we spoke and worked. We didn't do good enough but we worked during the week to control his [Brobbey's] powers. For sure in a few situations we didn't do well.
"Today was going to be tough, a really close game. This team give you so much space and so much of the ball we need to be more precise and patient."
