Release clause becomes a bargain: PSG reportedly very interested in Bayern Munich star
Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly taking a keen interest in Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano.
According to Foot Mercato, the Frenchman extended his contract with the German record champions until 2030 only in February. But the new deal is said to contain a release clause that looks increasingly like a bargain given the defender's consistently strong performances.
The reported fee is €65 million, payable if a club signs the 28-year-old next summer. PSG could afford that without major difficulty, although nobody has officially confirmed the release clause exists.
Looking for a long-term successor to defensive leader Marquinhos, PSG could turn to Upamecano, who is four years younger. Marquinhos, 32, has played for the club for 13 years and become a true Parisian legend. His contract in the French capital runs until 2028, leaving PSG likely to seek a high-quality replacement next summer or, at the very latest, after the 27/28 season.
At Atletico Madrid this week, the Bayern Munich defender caught the eye again when he took striker Julian Alvarez completely out of the game in his club's 2-0 Champions League away win. He now leads Bayern Munich's defence, with Jonathan Tah and Min-jae Kim alternating alongside him.
Upamecano joined Bayern Munich for €42.5 million in 2021. He has scored three goals in 12 competitive appearances across all competitions for Bayern Munich this season.
