Bryan Mbeumo has insisted the Manchester United players did not let Michael Carrick down at Chelsea, despite the club's winless run extending to nine games.

Manchester United lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to confirm the club's longest run without a win since 1988.

Second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer did the damage, against a United side that had Lisandro Martinez sent off for two bookings in quick succession.

United did have chances, with Matheus Cunha having a first-half goal ruled out for offside, and Bruno Fernandez blazing a good chance over the bar. Mbeumo also hit the woodwork late on.

Defeat piles the pressure on Michael Carrick, whose future at Old Trafford looks in real jeopardy with the club sat precariously above the Premier League relegation places. Despite the loss, Mbeumo said the attitude of the side was right throughout.

"No, obviously not [players did not let Carrick down]. I think the mentality was there right from the first minute," he said.

"Harder with 10 men. We still trust everyone. With the men down, we still had some frustrations at the end. But I think we have done everything as a team today.

"Maybe today we just missed some chances. We could have been up early in the game, but that's a positive to take out of this game.

"I think we have done a lot of right things, especially in the first half when we could have been up one or two-nil.

"I think the first half we had a lot of chances, which is a positive. The last few games we didn't create a lot, but obviously they're a good team with qualities.

"What we have shown today - the mentality was there. Everyone worked really hard and we still have to find some bits at the training ground. Work even harder and yes we have two very important games.
