Chelsea have confirmed the signing of former Tottenham prospect Leo Black on a two-year contract after the versatile 20-year-old impressed during a trial at Cobham.

Chelsea turn Black’s trial into a two-year deal

The London Standard’s Arthur Ferridge reports that Black has joined the Blues after leaving Spurs when his contract expired at the end of last season. The right-back and midfielder had spent 12 years at Tottenham, where he featured for the development squad.

Black marked the move with a message on Instagram: “A blessing to be given such an amazing opportunity. Thank you God.” It is a short post, but the opportunity is a significant one: he has a fresh start at a club where strong academy performances can put a player into the first-team conversation.

His time at Tottenham brought close to 100 appearances across the club’s age groups. He also trained with the first team under Ange Postecoglou and travelled on Spurs’ 2024 pre-season tour, giving him some exposure to senior-level football before his departure.

Black’s Chelsea trial began earlier in the summer, and he wasted little time making an impression. He made his debut for the Under-21s, now known as Cobham Next Gen, in a 5-4 win over West Ham, then scored against Arsenal and Fulham.

Those two Premier League 2 goals earned him a nomination for the division’s September Player of the Month award, alongside new team-mates Reggie Watson and Chizaram Ezenwata. The nomination is a useful early marker, but the important point for Chelsea is that Black showed enough in competitive matches for the club to offer him a two-year contract.

That adaptability gives the academy a player who can contribute at right-back or in midfield. It also makes this a sensible addition: Black has already shown he can make an impact in the age-group side, rather than arriving on reputation alone.

We have seen Chelsea’s young players attract attention during the academy’s Australia tour, but the route from Cobham to the senior side is never automatic. Xabi Alonso has shown he is willing to give a youngster a chance, starting Watson against Leeds in the Carabao Cup, yet opportunity depends on the squad and the fixture calendar.

The London Standard notes that Chelsea’s lack of European football this season could limit chances to promote academy players. That makes Black’s immediate task clear: establish himself with Cobham Next Gen, keep producing, and make it difficult for the first team to overlook him. For now, the two-year deal is a vote of confidence, not a promise of senior minutes.

The challenge for Black is to turn an encouraging trial into sustained progress. Chelsea’s academy players on the Australia tour showed the kind of development pathway he will now hope to follow.
