football.london’s Chelsea writers agree on how they would handle Cole Palmer in their proposed Bournemouth XIs, while Joao Pedro’s knee issue leaves the No.9 choice open.

Palmer and Joao Pedro shape two proposed Chelsea XIs

Chelsea host Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge this weekend, but these are selection opinions, not confirmed team news. Xabi Alonso was still due to give a public update on his injured players on Friday 9 October.

In a discussion published at 07:00 on 9 October, Bobby Vincent and Jake Stokes both picked a 3-4-3 and agreed on a defensive core of Emiliano Martinez, Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill. Their choices diverge in midfield and, crucially, up front.

Vincent would leave Palmer out if he is not fully fit and bring him on from the bench. Stokes includes him in his starting front three despite noting that Palmer had not been pictured on the grass at Cobham. The fitness situations involving Palmer and Joao Pedro remain central to the debate.

Joao Pedro’s issue is knee-related, Vincent says, while Stokes describes him as nursing a knock. Vincent would start Danny Welbeck at centre-forward; Stokes sees the uncertainty as a chance to try a fluid attack without a recognised striker. Chelsea’s Premier League return follows an international break that the primary report describes as extended to three weeks. The Blues’ previous match was a 3-0 defeat to Brentford, according to supplementary reporting.

Vincent’s proposed XI is Martinez; Acheampong, Lacroix, Colwill; Marco Palestra, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Pep Chavarria; Estevao Willian, Morgan Rogers, Welbeck. He says Palestra has yet to play a competitive match for Chelsea since signing in the summer and may not last the full 90 minutes. Vincent also wants Caicedo to be fit enough to play alongside Lavia.

Stokes’s XI is Martinez; Acheampong, Lacroix, Colwill; Pedro Neto, Jordan Henderson, Lavia, Chavarria; Estevao, Palmer, Rogers. He prefers Neto at right wing-back and Palmer in a front three with Estevao and Rogers. He suggests Alonso could change the striker-less setup at half-time or after an hour if needed.

The difference is more than a personnel swap. Vincent gives Welbeck the chance to lead the line as he looks for his first Premier League goal for Chelsea, with Estevao stepping in if Palmer is not ready. Stokes says Welbeck did little to impress against Brentford and argues Estevao deserves a start after his performances for Brazil during the break.

Both approaches are reasonable, but the risk is obvious: starting Palmer before he is ready or asking a fluid front three to solve a game without a natural No.9. Alonso’s attacking structure at Chelsea will be tested by whichever combination he chooses.

In other news…

Alonso was expected to update supporters on Friday 9 October about whether Palmer, Joao Pedro and Caicedo could take part on Saturday. That update, not either writer’s prediction, will narrow the options.

The selection questions in Chelsea’s predicted XI have again put fitness at the centre of the conversation. The official team sheet will confirm whether Palmer starts, comes off the bench or is left out.
