Chelsea return picture takes shape as James stays week to week
Chelsea have provisional return dates for Reece James, Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha after the 5-1 win over Bournemouth, but James remains a week-by-week uncertainty ahead of Everton.
James and Gittens could return against Tottenham
The Standard reports that James is in a race to be fit for Chelsea’s trip to Everton on October 17, though the match could come too soon. His listed potential return is the home game against Tottenham on October 24, with his recovery to be assessed week by week.
Gittens is also listed for a possible return against Tottenham. The winger is expected to miss around three weeks after injuring his ankle while with England Under-21s; he left the camp early for assessment at Cobham. He had played 56 competitive minutes for Chelsea this season before the setback. His ankle injury had already left his availability uncertain.
Emegha’s potential date is earlier: October 17 against Everton. The Dutch striker is back in first-team training after a hamstring injury sustained in pre-season, but his omission from the Bournemouth squad does not necessarily indicate a fresh problem. The Standard notes that Joao Pedro and Danny Welbeck may simply be ahead of him in the pecking order.
The three dates are possibilities, not confirmation that any player will be selected. Emegha’s return to training is the clearest positive update, while Gittens has a projected absence and James’s timeline remains open. His potential involvement at Everton will depend on both his fitness and Alonso’s choice of forward.
Alonso faces further selection checks
James had been expected to start alongside Moises Caicedo in midfield against Bournemouth after returning to full team training following three weeks of rest. Instead, he suffered a knee issue in training on the Friday before the match and was left out. That followed his withdrawal from international duty after a hamstring injury, making the new setback a separate concern.
Alonso must weigh those timelines against the players already available. Caicedo, Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Marco Palestra all returned from their respective fitness issues to feature in the Bournemouth win. Chelsea’s wider injury picture has therefore shifted, but James’s absence removed a midfield option the coach had expected to use.
The Everton trip on October 17 is the next checkpoint. James needs further week-by-week assessment; Tottenham on October 24 is the listed possible return for both him and Gittens. Emegha could be in contention sooner, but training alone does not settle whether Alonso will include him.
In other news…
Gittens’s ankle issue has kept him out since international duty, with his possible return now placed later in October.
Emegha is back in first-team training ahead of his potential return against Everton.
