Chelsea are waiting for further information on Pep Chavarria’s injury after tests were planned to assess the issue that ruled him out of the Everton win.

Chavarria’s status remains unclear ahead of Tottenham

Chavarria travelled with the squad to Everton on Saturday, October 17, but dropped out before kick-off after feeling a problem during training on Friday. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said before the match that the club did not yet know the extent of the issue.

According to the account published by Roundtable on Sunday, October 18, Alonso said Chavarria was due to undergo further tests that day. The report did not provide a diagnosis or a confirmed return date, leaving his availability for Chelsea’s next fixture uncertain.

The setback interrupted what had looked set to be another Premier League start for the 28-year-old. Jorrel Hato took his place at left wing-back and assisted Pedro Neto’s opening goal in Chelsea’s 2-0 win.

Chavarria’s move from Rayo Vallecano made him a new option on the left for Alonso this season. His arrival at Chelsea had added depth to a position where selection continuity matters, but the club will need the assessment before deciding whether he can return quickly.

The immediate question is not whether the injury is serious: no confirmed diagnosis has been reported. It is whether the issue will keep him out of training or prevent him from being considered for the visit of Tottenham on Saturday, October 24.

Hato’s display at Everton gives Alonso a ready alternative if Chavarria is unavailable. Still, one strong replacement performance does not settle the longer-term picture; Chelsea need the test findings to understand how much of a setback this is.

Chavarria was not the only player absent at Everton. Malo Gusto missed the game through illness, according to the reports, while Emiliano Martinez suffered a fractured jaw and underwent surgery after being taken to hospital. Those situations have separate causes and timelines, so they should not be confused with Chavarria’s still-unspecified problem.

Reece James, Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha were also among Chelsea’s sidelined players, adding to the selection issues Alonso is managing. The club’s recent injury absences have already tested squad options, but Chavarria’s case remains unresolved until further medical information is available.

Jorrel Hato stepped into the left-sided role against Everton and supplied the assist for Neto’s opener.

Chelsea’s next fixture is a home London derby against Tottenham on Saturday, October 24, with Chavarria’s status dependent on the assessment.

Alonso’s next update will clarify whether the defender can return to contention or remains unavailable.
