Chelsea captaincy challenge grows after Reece James surgery
Reece James has undergone minor knee surgery and is expected to miss around three months, leaving Chelsea without their captain until 2027.
James expected to miss around three months after surgery
Sky Sports reports that James picked up the injury in training last Friday, before Chelsea’s 5-1 home win over Bournemouth. Chelsea confirmed on Friday morning that the operation had been successful; the 26-year-old is expected to be unavailable for roughly three months, with a return not expected until 2027.
The absence is set to cover a demanding run. Sky Sports says James will miss home matches against Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool, as well as Chelsea’s trip to Manchester City. He has made six appearances this season, including three Premier League starts.
James has had multiple injury setbacks during his career, making this another interruption after a more productive league campaign last season. He played 29 Premier League matches in 2025-26, his highest total since 2020-21, and signed a new six-year contract at Stamford Bridge in March.
He was called up to England’s World Cup squad after that campaign, but a hamstring injury at the tournament kept him out for three games. James returned to start the semi-final defeat by Argentina.
Levi Colwill wore the armband against Bournemouth. Xabi Alonso has also identified Moises Caicedo and Colwill as players who can shoulder leadership responsibilities, while stressing that influence is not limited to whoever wears the captain’s armband. Our captaincy picture will now matter more with James absent.
Alonso said James’s injury would not alter Chelsea’s January transfer plans because he expects the captain to be back around then, although he did not give a firm return date. Sky Sports’ analysis points to a heavier workload for Caicedo, with Jordan Henderson, Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia also expected to contribute significantly.
The immediate schedule starts with Everton away, followed by Tottenham at home, Liverpool away in the Carabao Cup, Manchester United at home and Sunderland away. Those fixtures fall during the period James is expected to miss, but the specific confirmed absences reported by Sky Sports are the Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool home games and the Manchester City trip.
James has begun his recovery, with Chelsea’s medical department supporting his rehabilitation at Cobham. Alonso declined to set an exact timetable; the working expectation remains around three months, leaving Chelsea to manage both the right side and the captaincy until his return.

Malo Gusto’s role in Chelsea’s right-sided options could become more important while James is sidelined.
Alonso may also need flexibility in Chelsea’s shape as he manages the squad through James’s recovery.
