Real Madrid looked like a different team with Bernardo Silva in the midfield. There was a time during the season when Silva was not playing consistent football for Real Madrid, and it seemed difficult for him to get a good amount of minutes, let alone become a starter for the club in just a few weeks' time.

Obviously, a season being as long as it is, he was bound to get minutes at some point, but no one expected that to change so soon, given how little Mourinho was playing him at a certain point during the season.

The game against Barcelona changed basically everything for the Portuguese midfielder. Silva has since played most of Real Madrid's games from the start and has looked quite good in that double pivot role alongside Aurelien Tchouameni.

Bernardo Silva has helped Real Madrid far more than fans realise

The Frenchman is able to become the aggressive anchor who defends admirably, while Silva is the ball-dominant midfielder who helps his team get out of press and have some sort of control over the game.

It does not seem like he will start every single game now because he is 34 years old, but Silva, for the minutes he has played this season, has looked quite good. Against Valencia, that was more of the same. Real Madrid had one of their best matches against Valencia on Saturday night, and his performance was brilliant to watch.

He moved with and without the ball well enough for Valencia's press to not be effective against Los Blancos, and Silva was also able to help create chances in the attack. He wasn't making that final pass, but he was doing a lot of what you would expect a midfielder to do before that final pass, and it looked really good.

Everyone can have their opinion on whether it should be Arda Guler starting on that side or Silva, but the truth of the matter is that Silva has played really well in that position. Guler has also played exceptionally well out on the wing, with the liberty to drift inside. Why fix something that isn't broken?

It is clear that Silva is a profile and a player who is desperately needed by this Real Madrid team. Whenever he is not on the pitch, or whenever someone like him is not on the pitch, the team looks a bit less likely to have some sort of control. This Real Madrid team used to live and die in chaos, whether it was a big game against Barcelona or one against Levante at the Bernabeu. Without a player like Silva, there was no control, so the game, even if Real Madrid were winning it, could have gone anywhere.

With the Portuguese midfielder in the picture, that has changed a lot, and the team looks much more stabilised than it has in the last couple of years. Hopefully that continues, because if Real Madrid fans were given the choice between the past and the present, they would definitely choose the present.
