Barcelona’s defensive frailties exposed in 4-2 Champions League defeat to PSG
FC Barcelona’s 11-match winning streak to kick off the 2026/27 campaign was ended by the defending European champions Paris Saint-Germain. They capitalised on mistakes by a shaky Blaugrana backline to record a 4-2 UEFA Champions League win.
For long spells of the evening, Hansi Flick’s men controlled the game, recording 54% of possession and responding twice to score-draws with the help of Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal. But a lack of cutting edge in the final third and late defensive errors saw Luis Enrique’s side run away with the points thanks to goals from Desire Doue, Lucas Hernandez, Vitinha, and Fabian Ruiz.
Mistaken control and shots fired in Paris were wasted
Coming to the French capital with an eye on controlling the game, Barcelona failed to adapt to losing Dani Olmo early on in the 27th minute. After Desire Doue put the hosts ahead in the 38th, the Catalans responded after the break with the precision of a side used to winning.
When Xavi Espart tucked the equalizer in the 55th, the game looked like Barcelona’s. With the Blaugrana registering an impressive 20 shots on goal, compared to a similarly impressive 20 for PSG, while recording 89% of passes completed over 516 attempts.
But when it was Barcelona’s time to kill the game as the hosts were on the ropes, they could not deliver the killer touch. Eight of the 20 shots by the visitors were off-target, with captain Raphinha blasting four shots before being substituted on the hour mark and substitute Karim Adeyemi failing to convert two decent chances with his introduction from the bench. At this level of European football, wasting territorial dominance against the reigning champions can prove fatal.
Defensive errors exposed the absence of Kounde and Eric Garcia
Coming into the game without injured defensive stalwarts Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia, Barcelona’s makeshift backline was exposed with the pressure the hosts put on the Blaugrana’s central zone in the final half-hour.
With a triple substitution from Hansi Flick in the 60th minute to bring on Rodri, Gavi, and Adeyemi for Marc Bernal, Pedri, and Raphinha, Barcelona lost the shape at the back and were punished in the 72nd by Lucas Hernández who powered a header into the top corner to give PSG the lead.
The most telling moment of the game arrived seven minutes later when Lamine Yamal produced an individual moment of quality to score an equalizer for Barcelona after the 79th, before the Blaugrana backline switched off completely from the restart. Barely two minutes after Yamal’s equalizer, Vitinha was given too much room to roll home PSG’s third goal in the 81st, before Fabian Ruiz sealed the win in the 86th.
Conceding two goals in a 14-minute window is never ideal, with the Catalans missing the composure and positional awareness of Pedri.
Joan García and Xavi Espart were the stars in dark night
Despite the frustrating loss, two players emerged from the wreckage in Paris with their reputations enhanced: goalkeeper Joan Garcia and teenager Xavi Espart.
While conceding four goals rarely looks good, Joan Garcia was the reason the scoreline wasn’t heavier earlier in the contest as the 25-year-old shot-stopper registered eight saves against 14 shots on target for PSG’s attack. Repeatedly coming to the rescue of an exposed high line, Garcia silenced his critics in Europe for the second successive week.
Alongside him in goal, the fearless displays of Xavi Espart were rewarded with a change in the 74th as he was replaced by full-back Alejandro Balde. Required to step up during an injury crisis, the La Masia prospect put in a composed performance on the ball, before capping off his night by registering the 55th-minute equalizer which briefly put Barcelona in the driver’s seat.
Notably, it was only after Espart left the pitch in the 73rd minute that the right side of the defense completely unravelled for PSG’s final two goals.
With the undefeated streak officially over, Flick has less than five days to regroup before hosting Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou.
