Xabi Alonso has confirmed Reece James is expected to be sidelined for several weeks following knee surgery, while Emmanuel Emegha is set to return to training next week.

James suffered the injury in training and has since undergone a successful operation, with Chelsea unwilling to put an exact timeframe on his recovery.

“We are all disappointed, especially for him,” Alonso said.

“He wanted to have a good start after the international break, but he picked up an injury.

“The surgery has been successful. We are supporting him.

“I wish him the best recovery. We won’t set timelines, but we expect him to be out for several weeks.

“It’s not going to be short. Whether it’s before or after Christmas then time will tell. It needs to be done properly.”

Alonso insists Chelsea have enough depth to cope with James’ absence ahead of their clash with Everton.

“We have a big squad to deal with injuries,” he said.

“We have four more games until the next break so I think we can manage well with the players that we have.”

There was more encouraging news on Emegha, who is expected to resume training next week.

“He’s going to be training next week but is still not 100% fit to be playing,” Alonso said.

“At this moment he’s having little things, unfortunately he’s not been available but we are looking forward and when he feels good, he can help the team.

“It’s going to be difficult for defenders when he’s in good shape.”
