After his late winner: Valverde reveals the secret behind Real Madrid's comeback against AEK Athens

"We will never stop trying"

Federico Valverde has revealed the secret behind Real Madrid's comeback against Greek hosts AEK Athens on Wednesday evening.

The Whites trailed in Athens before turning the game around for a late and precious 3-2 win, claimed in the fourth round of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

Valverde struck the winner in the 90+2 minute to hand Madrid three vital points.

Speaking to the "Movistar" network, Valverde said: "It was a difficult and complicated match. I think we controlled the course of the play. I congratulate the team on its efforts."

He continued: "Their first goal affected us. The team continued its usual play and the work we had done during the week. We regained control, and we felt comfortable again. We started attacking once more and put in the same effort we had been putting in."

Asked about turning the tables on AEK, the Real Madrid captain explained: "The credit goes to the coaching staff and the players for their continued trust in their team-mates."

He went on: "It is a pleasure for me to play under the leadership of this coaching staff. We will never stop trying."

On that winning goal in the final seconds, he commented: "Sometimes I think about it a lot. I am grateful to my team-mates who give me the confidence to try."
