  • Wrexham and Sheffield Wednesday have both lost their opening two league matches

  • The Red Dragons have scored six goals in three matches this season

  • Recommended bet: Wrexham to win and over 2.5 goals

Wrexham are unfortunate to have picked up zero points from their opening two matches in the Championship, but they will hope to get off the mark when Sheffield Wednesday visit The Racecourse Ground on Saturday.

After taking a 1-0 lead into injury time of their opening match against Southampton, the Red Dragons fell to an agonising 2-1 defeat before also being edged out by the odd goal when facing West Brom, a match they lost 3-2.

Playing two of the favourites for promotion in the opening rounds of the season was always going to be a tough start to life in the second tier for the Welsh side, but this weekend sees them with an eminently winnable match against struggling Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls have all manner of off-field problems to deal with, and things are not going much better on the pitch with two defeats in their first two league games.

Team News

Wrexham striker Josh Windass has been ruled out of facing his former club with a hamstring injury. He joins fellow forward Jay Rodriguez in the treatment room, along with Ollie Rathbone, Liberato Cacace, George Thomason and Andy Cannon.

Sheffield Wednesday have a threadbare squad due to their off-field issues, and an injury to goalkeeper Pierce Charles has only exacerbated those shortcomings.

Wednesday have only three untried youth keepers in their squad, the eldest of whom, Killian Barrett, 21, is believed to also be out injured.

The club are looking to bring in emergency cover in that slot, but there are no guarantees this will get done before the clash with Wrexham.

The stats

Wrexham are yet to get off the mark in the Championship but they have not been short of goals, scoring six times across league and cup, while there three matches have featured 14 goals in total.

Sheffield Wednesday’s fixtures have also been lively. The Owls have scored four in three league and cup outings, but they have shipped eight at the other end.

With the visitors still managing an injury crisis in goal, Wrexham will be confident of making their attacking pressure count.

Prediction

Wrexham have yet to hit their stride in the Championship, but Saturday’s meeting with Sheffield Wednesday looks like the perfect opportunity for Phil Parkinson’s side to register a first win of the campaign.

The Red Dragons have suffered back-to-back defeats despite being competitive in both matches, with late goals costing them dearly.

That will be a concern for Parkinson, but their attacking play has been encouraging, and in front of their home crowd at the Racecourse Ground, they will fancy their chances of putting things right.

Sheffield Wednesday arrive in Wales facing problems of their own. Henrik Pedersen’s men are already light on squad depth, and a mounting injury crisis in goal has left them particularly vulnerable.

Without stability between the posts, the Owls look there for the taking, especially against a side as dangerous in attack as Wrexham.

Both teams have defensive frailties, which points to goals at either end, but Wrexham’s superior firepower should make the difference.
