  • Stoke have won their opening two Championship games by an aggregate score of 6-1

  • Southampton have taken four points from their opening two matches

Stoke have made a superb start to their Championship campaign with back-to-back wins over Derby and Sheffield Wednesday.

Mark Robins' team have hit six goals so far this season, conceding just one, as the former Coventry manager looks to mount a promotion push in his first full season in charge of the Potters.

Recently relegated Southampton are also unbeaten this campaign, following up a 2-1 win over Wrexham with a 1-1 draw at Ipswich.

The Saints showed great heart in seeing off the Welsh side with two goals in injury time, however, that it took them so long to get over the line in a match they dominated will be a concern for new manager Will Still.

Team News

Southampton look set to be without Will Smallbone and James Bree for the remainder of the month but have an otherwise fully fit squad to choose from.

Still made two changes from the win over Wrexham for the clash with Ipswich. Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Mateus Fernandes came in for Ronnie Edwards and Yukinari Sugawara and both could remain in the starting line-up for this clash.

After routing Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 last time out, Stoke boss Robins may opt to name an unchanged side. However, Ben Pearson will be back available following his injury against Derby on the opening day of the season.

It looks like a straight call between Pearson and Tatsuki Seko for the spot alongside Lewis Baker in central midfield.

Robins will continue to be without Laime Cisse, Steven Nzonzi and Sam Gallagher, while new signing Maksym Talovierov could come into contention to make his Potters debut.

The stats

Stoke have won three and drawn one of their past six meetings with Southampton, including two wins and a draw from their last four trips to St Mary’s.

Both teams head into this match unbeaten so far in all competitions.

The most recent league meetings between the clubs came in the 2023-24 season, with both teams winning 1-0 away from home.

Adam Armstrong should lead the line for the Saints, the striker is yet to get off the mark this campaign and managed just three goals in 16 appearances at West Brom last season when on loan.

Stoke’s main goal threat comes from on-loan Manchester City youngster Divin Mubama. The former West Ham man has scored in each of his Championship appearances to date.

Prediction

Still’s task at Southampton is for an immediate return to the Premier League, but the Championship is a notoriously difficult league to get out of. Needing two injury-time goals to get past newly-promoted Wrexham was proof of this if any were needed.

Following this late win up with a 1-1 draw at Ipswich has got Still off to a satisfactory start at the Saints but they face a team in form this weekend.

Stoke have looked lethal in attack so far this campaign, notching three goals in each of their league games to date, and the Potters can take something from the game at St Mary’s.
