  • Recommended bet: Charlton or draw double chance

Leicester have left a lot to be desired in their opening two games of the Championship campaign following last season’s relegation from the Premier League and they could be in for a tough time against Charlton at The Valley on Saturday lunchtime.

The Foxes made a winning start to the Championship campaign but they needed two second-half goals to come from behind against 10-man Sheffield Wednesday and have since been unable to build on that.

They were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League One Huddersfield and went down 2-1 away at Preston, showing that stark improvement is required if they are to make an immediate return to the top-flight.

Given that Wednesday are a team in crisis and have since been brushed aside 3-0 at home to Stoke, there are plenty of reasons to take on Leicester at the short prices available.

Charlton secured a Championship return via victory in the League One playoffs last season and they have made a promising start to life in the second tier, beating Watford 1-0 at home before a goalless draw with Bristol City.

The Addicks are defending courageously and, having seriously bulked up their squad this season with plenty of fresh faces, they are sure to make life tough for the Foxes.

Team news

Charlton remain without defender Reece Burke and forward Matty Godden but new signings Sonny Carey, Rob Apter and Charlie Kelman have settled in well and are set to start.

Having arrived from Reading, influential midfielder Harvey Knibbs will be hoping to force a first Charlton start and he grabbed the winner from the substitute’s bench in their first home game against Watford.

Summer signings have been hard to source for Leicester — veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is their only new arrival — and they remain without injured quartet Harry Souttar, Ricardo Pereira, Victor Kristiansen and Bobby De Cordova-Reid.

Prediction

Leicester have been unable to strengthen their squad over the summer, while also being weakened by the departures of Mads Hermansen, Wilfred Ndidi, Conor Coady and Jamie Vardy, and it may take them time to hit top stride.

That has been evident in the opening games of the season. The Foxes were first pushed all the way by a Wednesday side that have a squad of only 15 first-team players and they struggled to create chances in last weekend’s 2-1 loss at Preston, who edged the shots on target count 4-2.

Charlton are sure to be roared on by a packed-out crowd at The Valley and, having kept two clean sheets in as many Championship matches, Leicester could be frustrated.

The Addicks are on a real roll at home, where they are unbeaten in 18 matches, and they should not be underestimated as they have assembled a seriously strong squad under the tactically astute Nathan Jones.
