Borussia Dortmund star chases Champions League legends

Serhou Guirassy keeps writing his name into Champions League folklore. The Guinean has now hit 23 goals in just 31 appearances in the competition.

Both strikes came in Dortmund's 2-1 win over Azerbaijan's Qarabag on Tuesday evening, in the third round of the league phase.

That double edged the striker closer to Marco Reus's record as Borussia Dortmund's top scorer in European competition.

Figures from "Mister Chip" on X make Guirassy the fourth-fastest player to reach this tally in tournament history. Only Erling Haaland (19 matches), Filippo Inzaghi and Ruud van Nistelrooy (29 each) got there quicker.

A historic race with the greats

The milestone puts Guirassy ahead of some heavyweight names. Mario Gomez needed 33 matches to reach 23 goals, Harry Kane 35, Karim Benzema 37, Robert Lewandowski 40, Kylian Mbappe 41 and Lionel Messi 42.

Guirassy has also bagged seven braces in the Champions League since the start of the 2024-2025 season. That draws him level with Harry Kane for the most in the tournament across that period, according to "Opta".

Reus's record and a distinguished African standing

Only one Dortmund player has ever passed 20 goals in the competition before him. That man is Marco Reus, who holds the club record of 24, according to "Squawka".

On the African front, those 23 goals put Guirassy fifth among the continent's all-time Champions League scorers.

Ahead of him sit the legends. Mohamed Salah leads the way with 50 goals, followed by Didier Drogba (44), Samuel Eto'o (30) and Sadio Mane (27), according to "Stats Foot".

At 30, Guirassy still has time to at least overhaul Eto'o and Mane and cement his place among those stars. A rate of 23 goals in 31 matches tells you everything.
