Serhou Guirassy revels in Champions League win over Sabah
Borussia Dortmund star Serhou Guirassy thanked fans for their support during their hard-fought 2-1 win over Sabah in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The Guinean scored both their goals at the Baku Olympic Stadium to come up trumps for his side once again on a big European night.
Across three games in the competition this season, he's now scored four goals. The only time someone else was on target for Dortmund was Renato Veiga, who struck an own goal on the opening night against Villarreal.
Speaking to the press after picking up the Man of the Match award, Guirassy expressed his delight at having guided his side to a much-needed win after a few tough outings.
I’m obviously happy with the win because it was so important for the team. The last two games were tough, which is why it was so important to win today. And that’s exactly what we did.
After seeing an earlier shot saved by Sabah goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov, Guirassy broke the deadlock in the 10th minute by racing onto a loose ball to bundle it home after Felix Nmecha's original shot was spilled by Pokatilov.
The goal ended his five-game scoreless run in all competitions. He then returned to haunt the Owls in the second half, sending a delicate chip over Pokatilov after connecting Joey Veerman's fabulous cross inside the box.
Dortmund had plenty of opportunities to score throughout the game, with Fabio Silva particularly coming in with a few good chances, but a lack of killer finishing kept them from widening their scoreline.
Guirassy admitted this in his post-match interview but urged his side to remain consistent after an encouraging attacking display in Azerbaijan:
Congratulations to the entire team, and thanks also to the fans for their support. But we missed a few chances. If we can all be consistent, I believe we can achieve a lot this season.
Borussia Dortmund next play Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Serhou Guirassy, the Mr. Champions League
Although he's been Dortmund's main targetman in every competition since joining from VfB Stuttgart in 2024, Serhou Guirassy has been the most valuable during Champions League nights.
In 27 matches, he's struck 21 goals, including a Golden Boot-winning tally of 13 in his first season at the club. With four in the current one, he's already matched his tally from last season too.
There's something about European games that seems to unlock his best.
