Luis Enrique's Paris Saint-Germain face a tough test when Newcastle head to town on Wednesday
  • Paris Saint-Germain are sixth in the League Phase standings on 13 points

  • Seventh-placed Newcastle are level on points with the European champions

  • Recommended bet: Over 3.5 goals

There is plenty on the line at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday evening, when PSG host Newcastle in the final round of League Phase fixtures in the Champions League.

Both teams have collected 13 points from seven matches, with the sixth-placed hosts one place higher in the standings than the Magpies due to their superior goals scored record.

With the sides in the table from sixth place to 13th all on 13 points, the battle for a top-eight finish has gone right down to the wire and there should be lots of thrills and spills across the evening.

Team news

PSG are expected to be without Fabian Ruiz due to a knee injury, while there are doubts over the fitness of Matvey Safonov, Lee Kang-in and Joao Neves.

Quentin Ndjantou could miss out with a sore hamstring and Nuno Mendes will need to be assessed after picking up a knock, but Lucas Hernandez is available after suspension and Achraf Hakimi is in contention after recently returning from the African Cup of Nations.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes missed Sunday's defeat to Aston Villa due to an ankle issue and it is unclear whether he will have recovered in time for this clash.

Joelinton went off early in the second half of that loss after feeling his groin and he will need to be checked over, while Jacob Murphy, Tino Livramento, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar are all sidelined.

The stats

PSG have won two and lost one of their three Champions League games at home.

Newcastle have registered one win, one draw and a loss from their three away matches in Europe, netting seven times across those contests.

The Magpies were unbeaten against Les Parisiens in the 2023-24 Champions League, winning 4-1 at St James' Park and drawing 1-1 in Paris.

PSG have won five of their last six fixtures at the Parc des Princes, scoring 18 goals in the process.

PSG are the joint highest-scorers in the League Phase with 20 goals, four more than Newcastle.

Prediction

A draw may not be enough for either PSG or Newcastle to finish in the top eight of the League Phase standings and this should make for a more open, attacking game as both go in search of a crucial three points.

Les Parisiens have already shown their attacking prowess in the competition, netting a joint-high 20 times, and it is notable that exactly half of those have come at the Parc des Princes.

Luis Enrique's side have scored at least three times in four of their last six home assignments and will fancy their chances of racking up a few against a Newcastle side with just one clean sheet in their last 10 away fixtures.

However, the Magpies also have plenty of attacking threat in their side, boasting the likes of Anthony Gordon, Yoane Wissa, Harvey Barnes and Nick Woltemade, and the visitors can play their part in an entertaining affair.

United have netted at least twice in five of their last eight matches, while there have been over 3.5 goals in five of their last nine away games in all competitions.
