Liverpool welcome PSV Eindhoven to Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday night and will be glad of the break from the Premier League.

The Reds lost 3-0 at home to Nottingham Forest to drop into the bottom half of the table on Saturday, but have fared much better in Europe, winning three of their four matches.

Team news

Liverpool are expected to be without right-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley and so it may be that Dominik Szoboszlai fills in and plays in defence.

Giovanni Leoni is a long-term absentee and will not feature.

PSV are without forward Alassane Plea, who is sidelined with a knee problem, while Ruben van Bommel is out for the season with a similar injury.

The stats

Liverpool and PSV have faced each other seven times in the Champions League todate, with the Reds winning five of the encounters.

PSV have lost only three of their last 17 Champions League group stage/league phase matches, winning seven and drawing seven.

Liverpool need one more goal to reach 500 as the home team across all European competitions.

PSV are the team Arne Slot has faced most in his managerial career – the Dutchman has taken charge against Eindhoven on 11 occasions.

Prediction

Liverpool have lost eight of their last 11 matches and are currently on a horror run under manager Slot. After heavy investment in the squad over the summer, the Reds are yet to settle and look disjointed in each performance.

However, while the Premier League form has been shocking and the Reds suffered another defeat at home to Forest on Saturday, they have impressed in Europe.

Beating Atletico Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt and most recently Real Madrid, the Merseysiders are eighth in the Champions League standings.

More hopeful than confident of beating PSV on Wednesday, Liverpool should possess enough quality to get the better of the Dutch side under the lights at Anfield.

Saying that, PSV will prove a tough opponent, having gone unbeaten for 11 matches and winning eight games in that time to lead the Eredivisie.

In Europe, they have drawn on the road against Bayer Leverkusen and Olympiacos and recorded an incredible 6-2 victory over Italian champions Napoli in Eindhoven.

However, heading to Anfield is an altogether different challenge and, though Liverpool are finding it hard domestically, Slot's side should come out on top.

While Liverpool are favourites to win on the night, PSV will fancy their chances of at least finding the net and so backing both teams to score could be a smart pick.
