Team news

Liverpool left Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa out of their league-phase squad and that leaves them light on options, with Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni sidelined and Joe Gomez a doubt.

Atletico have fewer issues, with only injured Alexander Sorloth and suspended Arnau Ortiz unavailable.

The stats

Liverpool have won the last three meetings, beating Atletico 3-2 in the 2025-26 Champions League league phase.

Atletico have lost five of their last eight away games.

The Reds have won eight of their last 11 home matches.

Atleti have never beaten an English side in the Champions League group/league stage, losing six and drawing four times.

Eight of Liverpool’s last nine matches have seen both teams score.

Atletico have managed only one clean sheet in their last 16 Champions League games.

Prediction

Liverpool started last season’s Champions League campaign with a victory over Atletico Madrid and having got their first win under Iraola against Ipswich, they should follow suit on Wednesday.

Bradley Barcola looks set to make his full debut and that should add another dimension to a dangerous attack, one which will have no issues carving apart an Atleti defence which looked shaky in Saturday’s 3-0 hammering at Athletic Bilbao.

Alexander Isak was the hero at Portman Road, netting both goals to down Ipswich, and he is likely to carry that form into this clash. The Swede will be full of confidence and can add to his tally of three goals this season.

Tasked with keeping him quiet will be Cristian Romero, who may get overly physical in an attempt to limit Isak’s influence.

The Argentinian is no stranger to a card, picking up 12 in just 23 Premier League appearances for Tottenham last term, and he has struggled against the Reds in the past, being sent off in Spurs’ December loss to Liverpool.

Score prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Atletico Madrid
