It has been a tough start to the season for Unai Emery's Aston Villa

After a dismal start to their Premier League campaign, Aston Villa will be hoping the start of the Champions League can provide a springboard for improved fortunes.

The sheer amount of departures from Villa Park mean there is still a lot of work to be done, however, and it may still take time for Unai Emery’s men to get back to their brilliant best.

This could open the door for Club Brugge to land a positive result in Tuesday’s Champions League curtain-raiser at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Team news

Joel Ordonez is Club Brugge’s only absentee, meaning they could name an unchanged side from the one which won at Lommel on Friday.

Brian Madjo and Taylor Harwood-Bellis were standout omissions from Villa’s league-phase squad and the Europa League holders will also be without injured midfielders Amadou Onana and Johan Manzambi.

The stats

Club Brugge have won four of their last five matches, keeping a clean sheet in each of those triumphs.

Aston Villa have won eight and lost only three of their 12 Champions League games under Unai Emery.

Brugge’s 10 matches in the 2025-26 Champions League averaged 4.2 goals per game.

The Villans have managed just one shot on target in three Premier League games this term.

The hosts’ sole win in 19 matches against English opposition came against Aston Villa in 2024.

Villa have managed just one win in seven away outings.

Prediction

Nicolas Jackson, Ibrahim Mbaye and Joao Gomes are among the many good signings Aston Villa have made, but they are yet to make an impact and it may be a while yet before they do.

There are too many moving parts following the departures of Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Emilinao Martinez and Youri Tielemans, making Villa hard to trust.

Club Brugge are in good form, winning four of their last five matches, and at the very least should earn a point against the in-transition Villans.

Key to the hosts’ chances is Nicolo Tresoldi, who remains at the club despite a number of top clubs’ interest.

The German forward averaged 1.32 shots on target per game in last season’s Champions League and has started the new campaign well, scoring three goals in 431 Pro League minutes.

Summer signing Freddie Potts will also have a big say in the result but his desire to impress could lead to an overstepping of the mark.

He has already been booked three times in five Club Brugge appearances and committed two fouls in 45 minutes when taking on Villa with West Ham last term.

Potts is the standout candidate for a card to complete this bet builder.

Score prediction: Club Brugge 1-0 Aston Villa
