  • Bayer Leverkusen have won five in seven across all competitions

  • Newcastle unbeaten in three but lost last game in Champions League

  • Recommended bet: Draw and both teams to score

Newcastle travel to Germany to take on Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Magpies have bounced back from defeat at Marseille to take seven points from nine in the Premier League and will be aiming to carry that form into Europe.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, beat Man City at the Etihad Stadium at the end of the November, but have since lost to Borussia Dortmund and Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

Team news

Leverkusen will be without Lucas Vazquez, who has a muscle injury, while Exequiel Palacios is sidelined until January with a groin problem.

Equi Fernandez and back-up goalkeeper Janis Blaswich are also unavailable.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope is out with a knock, so Aaron Ramsdale will continue to deputise between the sticks.

Sven Botman is sidelined with a back injury, while fellow defenders Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth are also unavailable and forward William Osula has an ankle injury.

The stats

Leverkusen and Newcastle have met just twice before, back in the 2002/03 Champions League second group stage – the Magpies won 3-1 home and away.

Newcastle have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six matches across all competitions.

Leverkusen have lost just one of their last six matches against English team in UEFA club competitions, winning three, drawing two and keeping a total of four clean sheets.

The Magpies have won only two of their last 13 European away games, drawing six and losing five.

Patrik Schick has scored in Leverkusen's last two Champions League matches having netted just one goal in his first 28 appearances in the competition proper.

Newcastle forward Harvey Barnes, meanwhile, has scored four goals in his last four Champions League matches.

Prediction

Newcastle head to Leverkusen just a point ahead of Wednesday night's opponents in the Champions League standings and are slight favourites to win the clash.

However, while the German side have lost their last two Bundesliga matches, they have won five in seven across all competitions and will have taken great confidence after winning away at Man City earlier on in the competition.

Both sides are looking to build greater consistency in order to get closer to the top positions domestically, but should have enough quality to progress in the Champions League.

Two evenly matched sides, Leverkusen and Newcastle may have to settle for a point each at the BayArena, which both would likely take heading into the game.

Both teams to score could be a smart pick as Newcastle have failed to keep a clean sheet in six games, but have found the net in every one of their away matches since the start of October.

Meanwhile, Leverkusen have scored 19 goals in nine home games this season.
