Manchester United Transfer News: Simeone linked with Red Devils switch ahead of Madrid match-up

Atlético Madrid boss Diego Simeone usually attracts plenty of attention on the touchline – but all eyes will be on his son when Manchester United step out at the Metropolitano tonight.
Giuliano Simeone is the man of the moment on this occasion, after he was linked with a switch to Old Trafford on the eve of the Red Devils’ Champions League clash with Atleti.
A report in Mundo Deportivo suggests the 23-year-old is of interest to Michael Carrick’s outfit, who are set to take a closer look at their potential target in person this evening.
As struggling United aim for a morale-boosting victory in Madrid, we consider what Simeone would bring to M16 and whether a January move for the winger is a realistic prospect.
Plenty of interest
Manchester United aren’t alone when it comes to interest in Simeone.
Both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have reportedly made enquiries into his availability, such is the Argentina international’s burgeoning reputation.
He has been a regular in Los Rojiblancos’ first team since a breakout season in 2024/25, making 72 La Liga appearances and 57 starts over the past three campaigns – as well as featuring in a whole host of Champions League matches.
Those appearances have primarily come on the right flank, though Simeone has also occasionally featured on the left wing when called upon.
That was the case when Atlético last faced an English side, as he played on the left of a 3-5-2 system for 60 minutes during September’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
With the Spanish side utilising five different formations already in 2026/27, Simeone’s tactical adaptability will be part of his appeal to the Premier League’s elite teams.
But there is far more to the Rome-born creator’s skill set than straightforward versatility, with wide-ranging attributes that make him perfectly suited to the modern game.

Impressive out of possession
Simeone has started the current season strongly when it comes to output – registering two La Liga goals and two assists across eight matches.
That averages out at 0.66 goal contributions per 90 minutes of action, which is a more than a commendable return to date.
It is also an improvement on his solid but perhaps unspectacular record of four league goals and six assists in 2025/26, though only ten players in the division set up more chances for their team-mates.
He will hope to continue boosting his end product as the campaign develops, but many of Simeone’s strengths are more evident when his team are out of possession.
For example, the 17-cap international is a relentless presser and currently ranks eighth for total tackles won in La Liga this season.
It’s an impressive record for an attack-minded player, as is the 0.82 possession regains in the final third that he’s averaged over 547 minutes.
And some aspects of the former Zaragoza loanee’s game are more difficult to measure directly, with his exemplary positioning, off-the-ball movement and pacy runs crucial to Atleti’s success as a whole.
Being a hard-working team player perhaps personifies Simeone more than anything else, making him a perfect fit for his father’s high-energy tactical approach.

A tough deal to do
Those attributes translate well to most elite teams, of course, with wide players typically required to contribute defensively – as well as provide the creative spark for their respective sides.
As such, it is understandable why Manchester United would be keen to add Simeone to their ranks, particularly in light of an underwhelming start to the season.
The Red Devils are coming off the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw with ten-man Tottenham Hotspur and have only won one Premier League game all season, at home to Ipswich Town (5-2).
Defeats to Hull City (0-2), Manchester City (0-1) and a League Cup loss against Brighton (2-3) have heaped the pressure on manager Carrick, who is desperately in need of a result at the Metropolitano this evening.

That may put a halt to any speculation about his future in the short-term but – looking further ahead – adding a player with Simeone’s determination and energy would be a major boost to the English tactician’s chances of turning things around.
Unfortunately, signing Atlético Madrid’s No.20 may prove to be a challenging task, particularly mid-season.
He only agreed a contract extension back in January and is tied down until June 2030, with a reported £422 million release clause included in the deal.
Atleti would be unlikely to demand that full amount, but the fee to bring Simeone to Old Trafford is potentially exorbitant and outside of United’s reach.
Let’s not forget that the club were relatively conservative in the transfer market during the summer, bringing in three midfielders (Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans) and back-up goalkeeper Karl Darlow for a combined fee of around £146 million – not a huge amount by the standards of big-spenders Manchester City and Chelsea.
It therefore feels unlikely they will go out and splurge an outrageous amount on Simeone, though that could change over the months ahead if the Argentine decides he wants a new challenge away from Madrid.
Until then, it may be a case of Manchester United fans simply admiring Simeone’s qualities from afar tonight, in the hope they can sign him if an opportunity arises in the future.
