Florian Wirtz again impressed for Liverpool as they beat Villarreal 4-3 in the Champions League, continuing a run of good performances from the German.

After a somewhat slow debut campaign at Anfield, the start of Wirtz's second Liverpool season wasn't the best, either. The German assisted once and failed to score in the first seven games of the campaign.

Six of those games came before the international break - where Wirtz impressed former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp with a goal against Serbia.

Since the international fixtures, Wirtz has looked a different man. No Liverpool player impressed in the 3-0 loss to Manchester City on October 14, but since then, the German has been in stellar form.

With a goal off the bench in the 4-3 victory over Villarreal in Europe, Wirtz now has a goal or an assist in each of his last three games.

The playmaker assisted in a top performance against LASK, before setting up another team-mate in the Premier League victory over Brentford, and then got his first goal of the season against Villarreal.

Amid his sustained period of form, Wirtz must find a way to continue to string together good performances.

He has been questioned at times both this season and last, and for now, he's silenced his critics, but after his £116.5million move, it'll be expected that he carries on his fine form.

Florian Wirtz stats v Villarreal

Wirtz did not start against Villarreal, with Ryan Gravenberch preferred in the No.10 role and Cody Gakpo playing out left.

But at 2-2 at half-time, the German was brought on and put on a solid display, alongside the starring roles played by Rio Ngumoha and Alexis Mac Allister.

In 45 minutes of action, Wirtz scored once, made two chances, found his team-mates with 90 per cent of his passes and had two shots on target.

He made one line-breaking pass, was fouled twice and won seven of his eight ground duels.

Indeed, not only was he a threat in front of goal, where he made six touches in the Villarreal box, but his all-round performance was something to marvel at, as others have been of late.
