Lamine Yamal has broken a Champions League record held by Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe, just hours after taking a subtle dig at the Frenchman over the Ballon d'Or race.

The Barcelona star teed up Raphinha in Tuesday night's clash with Feyenoord on the opening matchday of the Champions League league phase.

Inside the opening three minutes, the young Spaniard slipped a pass to Raphinha, who surged forward, beat a string of Feyenoord defenders and buried the first goal.

That made it 21 goal contributions in the Champions League for Yamal, according to Opta: 11 goals and 10 assists.

Opta added that Yamal is now the teenager with the most goal involvements in Champions League history, overtaking Mbappe, who managed 20 during his own teenage years.

The record came hours after Yamal's fiery comments about Mbappe and the Ballon d'Or race.

Asked at Monday's press conference whether he deserved to win the Ballon d'Or, Yamal replied: "I don't think I need to say that I deserve the award, I'm not thinking about it."

He added: "I am proud of my team and my national side. We are world champions and I cannot ask for more than that. That is your job (the journalists'), and I will not start begging to get something."

Many read that as a shot at Mbappe, who had said 24 hours earlier: "I have a feeling that I am capable of winning it this year, which is why I have not distanced myself from this goal. If I had the chance to vote, I would vote for myself."
