Why is Manuel Neuer not playing for Bayern Munich in the big Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig? Is he injured, or has Jonas Urbig been promoted?
After the Champions League match against Viking Stavanger (3-3), Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer will also miss the Bundesliga’s headline fixture of matchday six against RB Leipzig.
Manuel Neuer is still struggling with a foot injury he sustained after his serious blunder in the last Bundesliga match in Augsburg (2-2).
Friday's final training session went ahead without Neuer. Coach Vincent Kompany explained: "I don't want to take on the role of a doctor," coach Vincent Kompany had explained. "It's his foot, not his thigh or shoulder. It won't take that long. Whether it's tomorrow or next week, we'll see. First, he needs to feel better and train when he can, then this phase will be over too."
How many times has Jonas Urbig played in goal for Bayern Munich in 2026/2027 so far?
As in Stavanger, Jonas Urbig will replace Neuer against Leipzig. The match will be Urbig's sixth appearance for Bayern across all competitions this season, one more than Neuer has made so far.
After Neuer's costly blunders in Augsburg, the media had already begun debating whether Urbig should replace him early as Bayern's first-choice goalkeeper. The plan is for Urbig to take over only after the season, when Neuer is likely to retire.
Bayern's leadership subsequently backed Neuer and all but ruled out a change of goalkeeper in the middle of the season. They have, however, agreed that Urbig should make regular appearances this season.
Despite that agreement, speculation has already emerged that Neuer could push to play as many games as possible after his recovery.
