Scare in Berlin: Borussia Dortmund once again fear for Konstantinos Karetsas
Konstantinos Karetsas was injured during Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga match against Union Berlin. The Greek Borussia Dortmund midfielder turned his ankle midway through the second half and had to be substituted.
Karetsas had replaced Maximilian Beier just a few minutes earlier (62nd) during the Black and Yellows' visit to the Alte Försterei. The attacking midfielder injured himself trying to turn past Union's Rani Khedira near his own penalty area.
He twisted his leg and was clearly in considerable pain. As staff treated him, BVB captain Nico Schlotterbeck immediately signalled to the bench that Karetsas could not continue. Staff helped Karetsas off the pitch, and US talent Mathis Albert replaced him in the 70th minute.
The difficult weeks continue for Karetsas. The 18-year-old new signing made such a strong impression after his 30-million transfer from KRC Genk in the summer, but he is still searching for his form following his collapse in the Champions League against FC Villarreal in early September.
Coach Niko Kovac spoke about it on Sky immediately before the match in Berlin: "We can all still remember the incident when Kostas fell over in the Champions League match. I think it's still in the back of his mind. We mustn't overlook any of that."
He continued: "I'm watching the lad, and he's not yet where he was before. I don't want to say that's the reason, but it certainly plays a small part in the back of his mind. So we mustn't ask too much of him." He was nevertheless convinced that "the lad will find his way".
