Borussia Dortmund visit Azerbaijani capital of Baku to face-off with Sabah FK on matchday three of the League Phase round of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League season.

The BVB are aiming to pick themselves up after the disappointing 1-0 loss against Bodo/Glimt in Norway last week and perhaps achieve their second win of the campaign.

Interestingly, Sabah and Dortmund have never clashed before. The former is making its Champions League debut this season and has seen mixed results so far, losing 4-0 to Manchester United on the opening day before a slender 2-0 win over Slavia Praha in Baku.

They had previously came up short in the qualifying rounds of the Conference League on three occasions, and once in Europa League too, which explains why the sides never crossed paths.

However, the BVB are no stranger to clubs from Azerbaijan, having played two of them in the recent past. Let's delve into their head-to-head record against those teams.

How many teams from Azerbaijan have BVB played against?

Borussia Dortmund have played only two teams from Azerbaijan before.

It was in 2010 when they crossed paths with an Azeri team for the first time as Dortmund were drawn against Qarabag in the playoff round of the 2010-11 Europa League season.

Five years later, in their first year of the post Jurgen Klopp-era, the BVB were placed in the same Europa League group as Gabala.

Tomorrow's fixture marks the first time that Dortmund have been drawn to play against an Azeri side in the Champions League. Sabah FK are also the second Baku outfit they play, after Qarabag.

What is Dortmund's record against teams from Azerbaijan?

Quite unsurprisingly, Borussia Dortmund boast a 100% win record against teams from Azerbaijan, having beaten Qarabag and Gabala in both their ties against both the sides.

Back in August 2010, the BVB thumped Qarabag 4-0 at home in the first leg of their playoffs, with Lucas Barrios and Shinji Kagawa scoring a brace each. This was followed by a narrower 1-0 win on their first Azerbaijan trip, with Barriors chipping in with the winner.

Against Gabala too, Dortmund had no issues cruising through their ties. The first leg, coming in Gabala, resulted in a 3-1 win for them courtesy of a sensational hat-trick from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, followed by a crushing 4-0 win at home with Henrikh Mkhitaryan running the show in Dortmund with two assists and a goal.
