Nicolo Tresoldi sets Champions League record – and offers a hint about his future with the Germany national team
Nicolo Tresoldi set a Champions League record with a dazzling display in Club Brugge’s 4-3 win away to Inter Milan.
The German U21 international scored three second-half goals for the Belgian side, becoming the youngest German to hit a Champions League hat-trick. At 22 years and 52 days old, he claimed the record and earned rave reviews from the Italian media.
After the final whistle, Tresoldi was happy to answer journalists' questions. His international future came up again: the striker is eligible to play for Germany, Italy and Argentina. Tresoldi recently announced that he would continue to play for the DFB until the summer of 2027 and the U21 European Championship. He has already held talks with the two senior national-team coaches, Jürgen Klopp (Germany) and Roberto Mancini (Italy). His plans beyond the summer of 2027 remain open.
"I'm happy with my path in the German national team," Tresoldi said, a remark likely to please DFB officials. "There are many strikers who are better than me – in Italy and in Germany too," he added. For Germany's U21 side, though, there is currently no better striker: Tresoldi has scored 16 goals in 27 international appearances.
Who is pursuing Nicolo Tresoldi?
Addressing his international future, the 22-year-old said: "I've spoken to Klopp and Mancini and both associations. I explained to them how I see it. What matters is that they understand." He has a major goal with Germany's U21 side: to lift the trophy at next summer's tournament. "My father won the U21 European Championship with Italy; now I want to win that title too," he said.
This season, Tresoldi has scored nine goals in 11 competitive appearances for Club Brugge. He moved from Hannover 96 to Belgium for €7.5 million in 2025, and his market value has since risen to €35 million.
