Borussia Dortmund threw away a 2-0 lead in almost unbelievable fashion. Niko Kovac's side went in front with ten minutes left and soon made it 2-0, with Joey Veerman supplying the assist. Just before the end, Ludovit Reis pulled one back, then a clumsy foul by Veerman led to Niclas Füllkrug's equaliser: 2-2.

For Dortmund, Veerman had to settle for a place on the bench. The Netherlands international came on with twenty minutes left in place of Jobe Bellingham. For Werder, Dutch pair Youri Regeer and Ludovit Reis formed the holding block.

Clear chances were hard to come by in the first half. Only towards the break did the fans at Signal Iduna Park have real reason to dream of an opener, but Marcel Sabitzer's free-kick crashed against the bar and striker Maximilian Beier was denied from close range by goalkeeper Karl Hein.

After the break, Hein kept frustrating Dortmund with saves from Serhou Guirassy, Nico Schlotterbeck and Ethan Nwaneri. Werder also had their chance through former Dortmund forward Füllkrug, but Gregor Kobel kept out his effort with an outstretched leg.

Ten minutes from time, Dortmund finally broke the deadlock. Substitute Konstantinos Karetsas cleverly laid the ball off to Guirassy, who then squared it for former PSV player Fábio Silva. The Portuguese player's scuffed shot was diverted into the net by Daniel Svensson: 1-0.

Then Dortmund made it 2-0, again with Veerman heavily involved. The former PSV player picked out Schlotterbeck's head with a corner to the far post, seemingly putting the game to bed. It was Veerman's first Bundesliga assist.

But Dortmund still let it slip from their grasp. They gave Reis too much space and the Haarlem native thundered home via the inside of the post. Six minutes were added on and Füllkrug, of all people, struck the equaliser.

With a late challenge on Mitchell Weiser, Veerman gave away a free-kick in a dangerous position, around 23 metres from goal. Marco Grüll swung the ball in to the unmarked Füllkrug, who headed home and celebrated wildly against his former employer: 2-2.
