Bayern Munich vs Stuttgart Match Preview

Bayern Munich begin their 2026–27 Bundesliga title defence against Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on Friday, August 28, with kick-off at 19:30 BST (20:30 CEST).

Vincent Kompany's side enter the campaign as defending Bundesliga champions after Bayern secured their 34th German league title last season. The Bavarians finished the 2025–26 campaign with a huge attacking output, scoring 122 goals across their 34 Bundesliga matches.

The timing of the opening fixture does present some questions, however. Bayern’s major international stars only recently returned from their post-World Cup breaks. Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano returned on August 14 and began team training a few days later, leaving them little time to build match fitness before the competitive campaign begins.

Stuttgart, meanwhile, face one of the toughest possible assignments on the opening weekend. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side finished fourth last season and also reached the DFB-Pokal final, where they were beaten 3-0 by Bayern.

The visitors have shown plenty of attacking promise during preseason, but they will need to improve defensively if they are to avoid another difficult evening against Bayern.

Bayern will be expected to control possession and create the majority of the chances, while Stuttgart’s best route to goal is likely to come through quick attacks involving Deniz Undav, Ermedin Demirović and Chris Führich.

Bayern Munich Team News and Key Players

  • Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano have returned to Bayern training following their involvement at the 2026 World Cup.

  • Bayern’s returning World Cup players have had limited time to prepare with the rest of the squad.

  • Serge Gnabry remains unavailable due to injury, while Lennart Karl is doubtful.

  • Jamal Musiala is in contention to return to an attacking role as he continues his recovery, having previously collapsed against RB Leipzig and then Heidenheim on Tuesday.

  • Vincent Kompany is expected to continue with a 4-2-3-1 system.

Potential starting XI: Jonas Urbig; Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah, Josip Stanišić; Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlović; Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala, Luis Díaz; Harry Kane.

Harry Kane is the obvious player to watch after another outstanding Bundesliga campaign. The England captain scored 36 league goals last season and remains Bayern’s primary source of goals.

Michael Olise is also a major threat. The French winger was among Bayern’s most dangerous creative players last season and will be expected to provide chances for Kane from the right.

Jamal Musiala could also play a decisive role. His ability to operate between the lines should give Stuttgart’s midfield and defence a difficult problem to solve.

Stuttgart Team News and Key Players

  • Stuttgart are expected to enter the season with a strong attacking group led by Deniz Undav and Ermedin Demirović.

  • Jamie Leweling is expected to return after illness.

  • Dan-Axel Zagadou (hamstring) has been listed among Stuttgart’s injury concerns.

  • Angelo Stiller remains an important figure in midfield.

  • Maximilian Mittelstädt provides Stuttgart with an attacking option from the left.

  • Sebastian Hoeneß is expected to continue with a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Potential starting XI: Alexander Nübel; Luca Jaquez, Jeff Chabot, Ramon Hendriks; Jamie Leweling, Angelo Stiller, Chema Andrés, Maximilian Mittelstädt, Deniz Undav, Chris Führich; Ermedin Demirović.

Deniz Undav is the obvious player to watch for Stuttgart. The striker was one of the club’s leading attacking players last season and will need to be at his best if Stuttgart are to trouble Bayern.

Ermedin Demirović provides another significant threat. His physical presence and ability to link play could allow Stuttgart to hold the ball higher up the pitch rather than simply defending for long periods.

Chris Führich is another important attacking outlet. His movement and creativity could be especially useful when Stuttgart attempt to exploit space behind Bayern’s full-backs.

Angelo Stiller will also have a major role to play. Stuttgart will need his ability to retain possession and move the ball quickly if they are to prevent Bayern from completely controlling the midfield.

Previous Head to Heads

  • Bayern have dominated the recent matchup, winning the last five competitive meetings between the sides under Vincent Kompany.

  • Bayern won 2-1 in the 2025 German Super Cup.

  • Bayern then recorded a 5-0 Bundesliga victory at Stuttgart in December 2025.

  • Bayern won 4-2 at home against Stuttgart in April 2026, with the result securing the Bundesliga title.

  • Bayern defeated Stuttgart 3-0 in the DFB-Pokal final in May 2026.

  • The four meetings between the clubs during the 2025–26 campaign produced 16 Bayern goals, highlighting the attacking gap between the teams.

  • Stuttgart’s most recent victory over Bayern came in May 2024, when they won 3-1 at home.

Score Prediction: Bayern Munich 3-1 Stuttgart

Stuttgart should provide Bayern with a much tougher opening test than the scorelines from last season’s meetings might suggest. The visitors have an exciting attacking group and will be confident after a strong preseason, while Undav, Demirović and Führich have enough quality to cause Bayern problems if they are given space.

However, Bayern’s attacking depth should eventually prove decisive. Kane remains one of the most prolific strikers in European football, while Olise, Musiala and Luis Díaz give Kompany several ways to break down Stuttgart’s defence.

The biggest question is how quickly Bayern’s World Cup players can regain their rhythm. Kane, Olise and Upamecano have only recently returned to training, but Bayern have enough depth to cope. Stuttgart should score, but Bayern’s quality and home advantage should be enough to secure three points and begin their title defence with a victory.
