Historic blunder by Manuel Neuer, squandered chances and offside drama! Bayern Munich drop points in Augsburg
After a hair-raising blunder by Manuel Neuer and the fastest goal conceded in Bundesliga history, Bayern Munich have had to accept a setback and missed the chance to go top.
Vincent Kompany's side could do no better than a 2-2 (0-1) draw away to FC Augsburg in the Bavarian-Swabian derby on a hot autumn day and failed to capitalise on Borussia Dortmund's draw.
Manuel Neuer played a major part in that: the 40-year-old carelessly lost the ball straight after kick-off to Luis Diaz, and Robin Fellhauer gratefully accepted the gift after 8.4 seconds. No player has ever scored faster in the Bundesliga's 63-year history. Neuer raised his arms in apology after his glaring error.
Ismael Saibari (55) equalised for the German record champions against an FCA side who had started the season well, before Rodrigo Ribeiro (64) restored Augsburg's lead. At least substitute international Nathaniel Brown (80) salvaged a point for the visitors, while Serge Gnabry then hit only the post (83). Bayern also missed out on revenge for their only league defeat last season.
On Tuesday (9pm), Bayern get the chance to respond in the Champions League on artificial turf at Viking Stavanger. Another seven matches then await before the start of November.
FC Bayern without Jamal Musiala and Konrad Laimer - several goals ruled out
Alongside the injured Jamal Musiala, Bayern were also without Konrad Laimer. The Austrian became a father and so did not travel to Augsburg. Saibari took Musiala's position behind Harry Kane, while Josip Stanisic filled in at right-back for Laimer.
Before the Munich side had properly settled, they were already 1-0 down. Bayern quickly regrouped and turned up the pressure. The waves of attacks initially brought nothing. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Diaz, Saibari and Alphonso Davies either missed the FCA goal with their efforts or found Augsburg's back line in defiant mood. Bayern were even fortunate that Juma Bah, completely unmarked from one of FCA's few attacking moments after a corner, failed to make it 2-0 (35).
After the break, Bayern kept up the onslaught. Diaz thought he had scored after an error by Finn Dahmen, but a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside. Saibari's goal shortly afterwards from a Kane pass did stand. The game then opened right up. On a counter-attack, Neuer could only parry a shot from Calvin Brackelmann into the path of Ribeiro, who tapped in the rebound. Bayern then threw everything at it. Kane also laid on Brown's goal.
