Harry Kane will soon end any speculation surrounding a potential Bayern Munich departure. Reports on Thursday suggested that the England captain had agreed a new contract in principle with the Bundesliga powerhouse.

The former Tottenham Hotspur hitman has been linked with a move away from Bavaria at the end of the campaign. His current deal expires in the summer. Bayern were understandably keen to tie him down, not necessarily for the long term, but in order to ensure he continues to fire FC Hollywood to glory.

Indeed, he’s won the Bundesliga twice and the DFB-Pokal once since swapping London for Munich. All that’s missing is the Champions League. And, from a personal perspective, the Ballon d’Or, though that run is expected to end later this month. Kane is the frontrunner for the award, the winner of which will be announced in London. It’ll be some homecoming for the Three Lions hitman.

A new deal, then, makes sense for all involved. Kane wants to win the Champions League. He’ll have a far better chance of doing so with Bayern Munich than elsewhere. And the stats reinforce Bayern’s eagerness to prolong his stay in Germany.

After all, Kane has scored 101 goals and provided 23 assists in just 99 Bundesliga appearances since his move to Bayern in 2023. In all competitions, he’s scored 154 goals in 156 appearances. He became the fastest player to reach the landmark 100-goal figure in Bundesliga history, smashing Dieter Muller’s record of 129 games, one that had stood since 1977.

“I’m very proud to have now scored 100 and 101 Bundesliga goals. I haven’t been around that long. I’ve loved every second of it,” he said following the 7-0 win over Union Berlin last month.

Champions League records

A midweek brace against Viking in the Champions League saw him reach the 450 career-goal mark. He’s now scored in nine consecutive European matches. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (11) can surpass Kane. The Bayern star will go level with the Portuguese star if he nets in upcoming meetings with Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.

What’s more, Kane’s two-goal salvo in Norway saw him enter the top-eight Champions League goalscorers of all time. 57 goals is level with Bayern legend Thomas Muller, and one more than former Manchester United and Real Madrid hitman Ruud van Nistelrooy. He surpassed Lionel Messi’s 35 Champions League goals in his 30s in midweek. He’s now netted 36 times, and shows no signs of slowing.

Two goals in the 3-3 draw with Viking also took Kane to 50 goals this calendar year. As good a goalscorer as he is, Kane is unlikely to break Messi’s return of 91 goals, the Argentine doing so across 69 games in 2012. As things stand, he’d have to net an average of 2.63 goals per game across the final 16 games for club and country usurp Messi. It’s not against the realms of possibility given his goalscoring exploits for both Bayern and England.

In that time, however, he’ll come up against RB Leipzig this weekend, the Gunners next week, and then Borussia Dortmund, Atletico and, for England, Spain before the year is out. It’s a seemingly insurmountable task for the England goal machine, but not impossible.

England and Premier League numbers

And having equalled Peter Shilton’s appearance record for England, marking his 125th England outing with a brace against Czechia earlier this month, he’s expected to become the outright holder before the year is out.

Saying that, by penning a new deal with Bayern, Kane looks to have ended any hopes of becoming the Premier League’s all-time scorer. The Bundesliga record is well out of his reach, though his average of 1.03 goals per game is better than Gerd Muller’s 0.98, but he is within touching distance of Alan Shearer’s 260-goal haul.

Indeed, Kane has struck 213 times in England’s top tier, and is 47 short of matching Shearer’s return. There were hopes he’d one day return to the Premier League to get the job done, so to speak. Kane’s game isn’t centred on speed. There is still a chance he’ll one day complete a transfer back to England.

He’ll be a month out from turning 36 by the time his new Bayern contract expires, but age isn’t a factor that’ll impact Kane’s game. On the contrary, he seems to be getting better the older he becomes. He’s laughing in the face of Father Time.

It’s clear, though, why Bayern were so desperate to keep Kane on the books. They could have commanded a hefty fee for the frontman, even on a one-year extension before cashing in next summer. The stats back up the decision to retain his services, even with the clock ticking on his career.
