Borussia Dortmund star Gregor Kobel cheekily claimed that his side wanted to make things exciting after conceding their two-goal lead against Werder Bremen in their DFB-Pokal encounter.

The BVB prevailed 3-2 in stoppage-time, but had seen their two-goal lead wiped out by the River Islanders earlier on with in-form striker Niclas Fullkrug coming off the bench to a net a brace.

Julian Ryerson conceded a penalty to Bremen after a foul inside the area as Fullkrug made it 2-1 from 12 yards in the 65th minute.

Three minutes later, the German broke into a darting run forward though BVB's midfield and defense to arrow a fabulous strike and bring the visitors level.

In a space of just three minutes, Dortmund's lead was wiped out by Bremen again, having done so during their Bundesliga meeting on 9 October too.

Kobel reflected on the defensive meltdown of his side, making a sarcastic remark that Die Borussen wanted to spice things up. Speaking to the press after the game, he said:

We were playing quite well and had a comfortable two-zero lead. Then, I guess we wanted to make it a little more exciting.

Serhou Guirassy and Carney Chukwuemeka had scored inside the opening 20 minutes of the clash which had Dortmund leading 2-0 until Fullkrug's double.

But in the dying embers, Dortmund had a chance to win it from a free-kick on the edge of the box, and Marcel Sabitzer whipped it into the near post with a sensational effort to make it 3-2.

Kobel revealed he was confident of the Austrian buying it.

[Marcel Sabitzer] is a good free-kick taker, so we knew it would all work out in the end.

Dortmund have been plagued by their inability to close the game off after going in front, a tendency which cost them dear last season and returned to haunt them once more on Tuesday.

Kobel, however, gave it a cheeky spin, saying:

We wanted to give the fans something to celebrate and figured, why win by more than a goal if we can make it a close one?

Sabitzer's free-kick spared Dortmund the prospect of a daunting extra-time period, something the side wasn't too keen on with a crunch Bundesliga encounter with Bayern Munich coming up on Saturday.

The BVB now find themselves in the hat for the draw for the Round of 16 of the German Cup on Sunday, 1 November.
