Gerrard hails Harry Kane as greatness and backs Bayern star to win the Ballon d’Or
Steven Gerrard has said we are witnessing greatness with Harry Kane's career and has backed the Bayern Munich forward for the Ballon d'Or.
Kane starred as Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday night, assisting one and scoring a second from the penalty spot.
His goal saw Kane become only the second footballer to score in 10 consecutive Champions League games, after Cristiano Ronaldo.
Kane enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony as one of the favourites for the 2026 award. The 33-year-old scored 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern Munich last season to inspire the club to a German treble.
He also scored six goals at the 2026 World Cup, as England finished third to secure a best-ever performance in an overseas tournament.
Ahead of Wednesday's game at the Allianz Arena, former England captain Gerrard said Kane is arguably the country's greatest-ever player.
He praise Kane's remarkable record and said he cannot see an argument against the forward becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to win the Ballon d'Or.
"Let's just enjoy greatness, because that's what he is," Gerrard told TNT Sports.
"He's arguably the best English player there's ever been and that's the biggest compliment I can pay him. If you think about the greats that we've had, Harry Kane's in that conversation.
"I just think Harry's ticked every box [to win the Ballon d'Or]. Mr Reliable. Mr Consistent. Absolute goal machine. I just don't think there's an argument against it and I wish him all the best come that ceremony on Monday. I think it's now or never for him."
"He is the clear winner": Declan Rice backs Kane for Ballon d'Or
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice also backed Kane's case. The 27-year-old believes his England teammate should be the 'clear winner'.
"He is the clear winner. His numbers speak for themselves. The year he has had has been remarkable," Arsenal and England midfielder Declan Rice told TNT Sports.
"When you play with him, you realise how good he is, and when you play against him, you see how much of a pain it is.
"He is ridiculous, such a good player, and I am lucky I can play with him, not so lucky I have to play against him."
