Former Bayern Munich star enthuses: “Tresoldi can become a top European striker without any doubt”
Former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Yann Sommer (37), now at Club Brugge, believes his team-mate Nicolo Tresoldi (22) can have a great career.
Ahead of the Belgian top club's Champions League visit to Inter Milan on Wednesday evening, two familiar names dominate the build-up in Italy. Sommer spent years in Inter's goal before moving to Bruges. Tresoldi, meanwhile, is seen as a potential striking prospect for the Squadra Azzurra, should he decide to play for Italy's senior national team.
Sommer won't be drawn on that decision: "Don't ask me which national team he will choose; that is up to him," the former Bayern Munich goalkeeper told Gazzetta dello Sport. Tresoldi currently captains Germany's U21s and has scored 16 goals in 27 appearances.
While Germany coach Jürgen Klopp (59) wants to win the striker over for his team, Italy's new national coach Roberto Mancini (61) is also keen. Tresoldi has spoken to both, but does not want to make a decision with the DFB until next summer, after the European junior championship.
His excellent performances in recent months have attracted interest from both federations and clubs. Sommer is impressed too: "Tresoldi can, without any doubt, become a top European striker." The clinical right-footer is "humble and professional." The Swiss goalkeeper has no doubts about his potential: "He has the qualities to play for a big club."
After moving from second-division Hannover 96 to Bruges for €7.5 million in 2025, Tresoldi impressed in his first season as the club won the Jupiler Pro League title. He has carried that form into this season, scoring six goals in ten competitive appearances. Tresoldi was also on the scoresheet in the 2-3 defeat to Europa League winners Aston Villa in their Champions League opener.
At the weekend, he converted a penalty to make it 3-0 in a 4-1 away win against RAAL La Louviere.
Speculation about the centre-forward's future has persisted in recent months, with Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid among the clubs linked with him. Tresoldi's contract in Bruges runs until 2029.
