Jamal Musiala has been unavailable to Bayern Munich for several weeks. Against that backdrop, Lothar Matthäus has a potentially explosive suspicion.

Writing in his column for Sky, Germany's record appearance holder expressed concern that the reigning German champions' attacking star may be more seriously injured than previously thought.

Officially, Musiala is out for Bayern Munich with a muscle fibre tear he sustained while with the Germany national team at the end of September. He has not played since.

"Jamal Musiala's absence has been dragging on for some time. In September in Amsterdam, there was talk of a muscle fibre tear. I suspect something else has happened in the meantime; a muscle fibre tear does not take six weeks to heal," Matthäus explained.

After a straightforward muscle fibre tear, players can usually start putting light strain on the injured area again within two to four weeks. A return to full competitive fitness typically takes four to six weeks. Musiala has now been sidelined for more than six weeks.

The 23-year-old's medical history also shows a tendency towards injuries and lengthy absences. This season, Musiala has already missed several weeks with an ankle injury and the lingering effects of the fibula fracture he suffered last year.

When will Jamal Musiala play for Bayern Munich again?

After collapsing twice during friendlies against RB Leipzig and 1. FC Heidenheim in August 2026, Musiala publicly revealed that he suffers from absence seizures. This form of epilepsy causes brief lapses, a fixed stare, momentary "switching off" or a change in awareness lasting from a few seconds to minutes, but without the dramatic convulsions of classic epileptic seizures.

Musiala is now said to be back in training and doing exercises with the ball again. He is expected to make a full return during the upcoming international break, which would make him available to Bayern Munich for the match against 1. FC Köln on 20 November.

Across all competitions this season, Musiala has made four appearances, scored two goals and provided one assist.
