Double injury shock for Bayern Munich! Two Bayern stars forced off early against Borussia Dortmund
Bayern Munich have to cope with two painful injury setbacks in the first half of their high-profile Bundesliga clash with Borussia Dortmund. Both Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry have had to be substituted.
Saibari was the first to suffer a setback after missing the biggest chance of the match up to that point in the 24th minute. Konrad Laimer played a superb through ball, sending the Moroccan through alone towards Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Saibari pushed the ball a little too far ahead, allowing Kobel to come out and clear it initially. In the ensuing challenge, the Swiss goalkeeper's head collided with Saibari's knee, and he also trapped the attacking player's ankle.
While Kobel dealt with the situation, Saibari stayed down grimacing in pain and needed treatment. "That looks like it could be something more serious," feared Sky pundit Lothar Matthäus. Shortly afterwards, the Moroccan's match was over. Nathaniel Brown came on in his place.
Just a few minutes later, Serge Gnabry suddenly felt pain in his left foot. It was not initially clear how the injury had happened. After receiving treatment, the Bayern attacker also had to come off in the 31st minute. Josip Stanisic replaced him.
A third injury nearly followed as BVB scored what appeared to be the opening goal. Carney Chukwuemeka jumped into Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig's face with his knee. The 23-year-old needed treatment but, unlike his two team-mates, was able to continue. Referee Tobias Stieler disallowed Jobe Bellingham's goal after a VAR review because Chukwuemeka was offside.
In the 38th minute, Konrad Laimer put the record champions ahead at the other end. After Felix Nmecha misplaced a pass, the Munich side broke quickly. Michael Olise carried the ball forward and found Laimer, who raced towards the Dortmund goal. Kobel saved his first effort, but the Swiss goalkeeper could not stop the follow-up. Bayern went into half-time 1-0 up.
