The German national team starts their new era during the first international break of this season as Jürgen Klopp gears up for his first game as the head coach of Germany. The former Borussia Dortmund head coach has made some interesting decisions in his first squad, including the young players from Bayern Munich.
Jonas Urbig is part of the squad despite not getting adequate game time this season. Urbig was not part of the German squad during the World Cup, but he has trained with the senior team in the past.
The former FC Köln goalkeeper is currently the second-choice goalkeeper behind Marc-André ter Stegen. Leno’s thoughts on Urbig are echoed at Bayern. The club chiefs have publicly backed Urbig to be Neuer’s long-term successor. The Bavarian club parted ways with Alexander Nubel and Daniel Peretz on permanent transfers in the summer, which further highlights that they believe Urbig is best placed to replace Neuer in the long run.
Urbig has delivered good performances whenever Vincent Kompany has handed him starts over the last two seasons. He is a confident goalkeeper when it comes to playing out from the back or being proactive when it comes to sniffing out danger from the opposition.
The former FC Köln goalkeeper is expected to get adequate playing time at Bayern as the season progresses. Considering the fact that Neuer has suffered injuries over the last few seasons, Urbig has a big role to play for the first team.
