Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund: 3 reasons why BVB will lose Der Klassiker
Borussia Dortmund face Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday in a high-octane, top-of-the-table clash. Both teams are unbeaten in the 2026-27 league campaign, winning five and drawing twice to collect 17 points. But the BVB could suffer their first top-flight defeat of the season tomorrow. Here are three reasons why:
1) Dortmund are wasteful in attack
Although the BVB are coming off a three-game winning run in all competitions, they have been utterly wasteful with their chances during this spell. Against Sabah, Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen combined, the BVB have mustered 43 shots, aimed 14 of them on target, but scored only six goals.
We're still only scratching the surface here, as Fabio Silva, Felix Nmecha, Carney Chukwuemeka and even Serhou Guirassy, who struck thrice during this run, have been guilty of missing some good chances which could have given them a bigger win.
Such wastefulness will cost them dearly against Bayern, who may not allow them too many chances on the ball as Dortmund must be efficient whenever they find an opening or get punished with another agonizing loss in the Klassiker.
2) Dortmund's haphazard midfield
Borussia Dortmund midfielders might be individually talented, but together, they have lacked cohesion. They often leave too many gaps among themselves for rivals to exploit whilst also looking hesitant to make a challenge when someone breaks forward.
Against Werder Bremen alone, there have been two such instances: in their league clash on 9 October, Ludovit Reis barged through the space inbetween Felix Nmecha and Joey Veerman before running all the way into the box to score. On Tuesday, Niclas Fullkrug repeated the trick, driving through three yellow shirts to score their second of the evening.
If Dortmund's midfield continues to part like the red sea, Bayern could devour the side with a barrage of goals.
3) Allianz Arena is a fortress
Let's not forget, this game is being held at the Allianz Arena, Bayern's home ground and one of the toughest places for any side to play in. In fact, since the 2025-26 season, the Bavarians have lost just one home game from 20 in the league, while winning 18.
That run includes three matches in the current term, and Bayern have trounced their opponents every single time: VfB Stuttgart were beaten 5-1 on the opening day, Union Berlin suffered a 7-0 shellacking while RB Leipzig lost 6-1 too.
Simply put, the Bavarians are a more aggressive and a more ruthless side at home, and no one understands this more than Dortmund themselves, who have suffered heavy losses there before.
